India’s Blackberry Ban Aborted [Last Minute RIM Concessions Appease Indian Government]
A bullet, ladies and gentlemen, has been dodged for those of you who hope to continue using Blackberry service in India. We reported here just days ago that, on August 31, there would be a ban on Blackberry service in India. But today, the Blackberries are still on and humming all across the subcontinent.
The Indian government rescinded its ban efforts following proposals from Research in Motion (Blackberry’s parent company) to provide ways to allow Indian authorities to snoop through emails received on the devices as needed.
This was apparently a substantial sticking point in the discussions leading up to India threatening a ban, but here’s the really interesting part. See, India’s about to have general elections pretty soon, and the time to look through Research in Motion’s proposals could take a couple months. Is this going to have an effect on elections? I know more than a few people who’d be upset with the government if they threatened a Blackberry ban in order to get snooping capability.
