AMD Kills ATI Name, Keeps Radeon For Itself

AMD Plans To Introduce Slew of New Products, No ATI Involved

Good news and bad news, folks–there’s a whole bunch of new Radeon products coming our way pretty soon, but the bad news is they now have nothing at all to do with ATI. AMD has basically now completely engulfed the ATI brand and is functioning on its own.

But like I said, there were a slew of upcoming products in response to this. They’re actually looking to combine their current line of processors with Radeon graphics technology on the same chip, a combination GPU / CPU, if you will. The first is codenamed “Ontario” and puts the “Bobcat” CPU with Radeon graphics. “Llano”, meanwhile, links a quad Phenom II core with a GPU, and is set for release in the first half of 2011.

Apparently, the reason for ditching the ATI name comes from some market studies they did that essentially “gave permission” to unite under the single brand name. Well, whatever reason they did it for, they did it, and they’ll bring us new products to make up for it. I’m fairly satisfied, really.
