iPhone 4 Proximity Sensor Fix Missing From iOS 4.1? [iOS 4.1 Not Expected to Fix Proximity Sensor for iPhone 4 Anymore]

Apple’s upcoming media event is just two days away and although we’re going to cover it extensively for you, there are still plenty of rumors that keep hitting the web and are worth checking out. While not official, a recent report suggests the fact that Apple will not address one important iPhone 4 issue (no, not the Death Grip) in its upcoming iOS 4.1 firmware.

iphone 4 proximity

I am talking about the proximity sensor issues that have been reported since the launch of the phone. It’s a major issue since it definitely cripples your whole iPhone 4 experience, or at least the calling experience. The faulty proximity sensor will let you end a phone call with your check, and that’s definitely an annoying feature. Holding the device a different way is not being offered as an alternative, although it might just work, and iPhone 4 owners are definitely waiting for a software patch to solve this problem.

iOS 4.1 will surely be unveiled in a couple of days as the new OS will definitely power the new iPod touch and enable FaceTime calling via email. But it looks like iOS 4.1 will not fix the proximity sensor issue. What’s the matter Apple? With two months after the official launch of the new iPhone you still can’t fix an important problem?

According to an Apple spokesperson from Australia, the proximity sensor issue will still have to wait and that’s pretty official in my book. I wonder though if Apple meant to have this information out in the wild as it will cause some stir with the millions of iPhone 4 owners. I am not saying that all of them are experiencing the issue! In fact, let us know in comments if the proximity sensor bug is ruining your calls day in and day out, or not really. I am just saying that Apple promised a fix in a major iOS update, and iOS 4.1 is about as major as it gets.

We’ll have to wait two more days to see what excuses will Steve Jobs come up next, and we’re definitely going to keep you posted. Maybe that Australian Apple spokesperson was wrong after all.

I have had all four generations of the iPhone. I’m on my fifth iPhone 4 over this issue. I cannot continue to make apologies to business clients because my phone muted me, put them on hold, or hung up on them and dialed someone else! If the proximity sensor is not fixed as part of Apple’s next software release I will be forced into a Samsung Galaxy S.

The proximity sensor issue was one that had been troubling me since I received the phone in late June. In recent weeks I have been able to gain access to a developers account.

As far as I can tell the issue seems to have gone away. It appears that some sort of diode can be seen illuminating in the prox sensor/light sensor slot.

I am not certain whether this is a fix or something that compensates for the hardware? It’s certainly a very disillusioning and perplexing issue to anyone experiencing it.

Regardless of tomorrow’s outcome and regardless if the issue is resolved I find it disturbing that Apple would wait 9+ weeks for some resolution.

I am on my 3rd iPhone 4 and still having the sensor issues, got to the stage of being uptight when on a call!!! Apple tried to fix the problem by uninstalling the firmware on my pc, then reinstalling it, bur to no avail. Have downloaded a free app called call guard, good when making calls but a bit fiddly when receiving them. I am thinking of changing to the samsung galaxy s but am a bit afraid of jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. any advice would be good.

I have an iPhone 4 with the updated iOS 4.1 – and the proximity issue has NOT been fixed. Mine NEVER goes dark, no matter where I put my face in relation to the phone. AAAARHGHG.

I loved my iphone 3gs but unfortunately waited too long for the iphone 4 proximity sensor fix to go back to it. Now im stuck with the iphone 4 or the “phoney”, because the “phone” function doesn’t work. Just ask everyone I know, or I should say, call and hang up on.

I downloaded the new update this weekend. It did NOT fix the problem. This phone is p*ssing me off. It is always calling someone while I am on the phone, muting my call, putting it on speaker, trying to face time people, and/or hanging up! This iPhone is the worst “phone” I’ve ever had.

OK, so I can’t make a call without my face or ear hanging up, adding a caller, dialing numbers, muting the call etc. It’s now November 18, 2010. The 4.1 release did nothing. Is there a fix in site???

i have put up with all kinds of iphone problems but this is terrible, i also have this problem which seems as it is one of the worst problems, our smart “phones” cant even make a call without hanging up, i bought it out right and for $760 i can even make a decent phone call

I was browsing hoping for a solution for my iPhone 4 sensor problem… It is a big issue!
Calling a customer service center, waiting on hold for a long period of time, then when finally get connected, my beautiful ear hangs up the phone! oh gosh… Please, come up with a solution already!

this problem is truly getting annoying, especially since apple took the time to fix the antenna issue for the verison iphone 4 release. no time to fix the second biggest bug the iphone 4 had? wow.

my iphones sensor problem is so terrible that even if i hold my finger over the sensor completely during a call, it will still not go black. ( ive been experimenting with this, despite my boyfriend’s protesting, by calling the land line repeatedly)

also, the dropped calls is due to the placement of the antenna on the iPhone 4 from AT&T. like i stated earlier, apple fixed this for the iPhone 4 release at verison. :/

will there ever be a patch or update?

i may just take it to the apple store and get it replaced (the apple store in university park doesnt seem to have a problem with replacing their products or repairing them. (aka, they’ve replaced many of my old iphones with out protest))

I have had my iPhone 4 for five months now, I was not experiencing this problem (PS) till about a two month or so back! It seems it is getting worse with time!!! I am on OS 4.1 and it resolved nothing! Now I am almost crippled in every call i make, my cheek hits the Mute or the Speaker …etc.
It is really terrible of Apple not to acknowledge this problem and even worse not to have already resolved it!!!
At this rate Apple will soon be known as the “pretty-gadgets-that-don’t-work” maker!!
I am now looking to trash the iPhone 4, I reside in Jordan and I bought the phone from Canada, so there is no way for me to return this piece of crap!
Anyone knows of an excellent Windows Mobile phone with a large screen, I really miss the strength of Windows software and am not so sure Android is as tweak-able and flexible as Windows was!!
iPhone 5?? Yeah, maybe 6 months after launching so we may know what shortfalls it will have!!!
Seems each iPhone they have made so far, and I owned all of them, have had a problem for the first year or so!
    A shameful record indeed. :-(
