Motorola Windows Phone 7: Where’s the WP7 Droid X Alternative?

Windows Phone 7 Handsets Coming This Fall, Motorola Not to Make Any?

Don’t look now but the smartphone business is about to be flooded by a ton of Windows Phone 7 handsets this fall. iOS and Android device will get an important blow from WP7 phones (hopefully) later this year. We’ve seen plenty of leaks from HTC, Samsung, Dell, Asus and LG and all these manufacturers have at least a couple of WP7 devices ready to be launch this October and November.

Microsoft has invested a great deal of money in R&D and although it feels it’s playing catch up when compared to Apple and Google, the Redmond-based company still knows how to build a smartphone OS. Windows Phone 7 is definitely meant to bring some balance to the force in a mobile world that’s being ruled by the iPhone and Android devices.

With all that in mind, a natural question that comes to mind is where are all the hot Motorola Windows Phone 7 handsets? Motorola was almost dead before Android came along in their life when it comes to hot devices. The Razr line wasn’t working for them anymore and they barely made it to the modern smartphone business. It took a lot of balls to play a last winning hand on Android and CEO Sanjay Jha is to “blame” for Motorola’s newly found success with Android devices. But is that enough for Motorola?

Unlike Apple, RIM or Nokia, and even Samsung with its Bada OS, Motorola doesn’t have its own OS to use in its own smartphones. And that might not even be required if Moto will be able to make enough hot Android smartphones to meet the needs of its worldwide customers.

But everyone else is also building hot Android devices, and if the Droid X was a hot device a month ago, it will be blown to pieces by the next HTC Android creation. And while Motorola is busy creating the next flagship Android device of its own, its competitors are also making Windows Phone 7 handsets thus attacking each other, and Motorola, on two fronts, Android and Windows Phone 7.

Motorola has what it takes to build a Droid X-like device running Windows Phone 7. But there are no leaks and rumors to point to that fact so that must mean they aren’t doing it. An old rumor/statement said that Moto will stay away of the Windows Mobile 6.5 universe, and I’m glad they did. That was a losing horse for Microsoft and partners from the get go. Other than the HTC HD2 or a few Samsung Omnia devices, can you honestly say you liked Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets?

But WP7 is a whole different story. Microsoft finally has a mobile platform that has a lot of potential and Motorola seems to be missing out on that action, and so will we, the consumers, as Motorola could be an important WP7 player.

So what do you say, Motorola, are you going to place all your eggs in the Android basket or are you willing to give Windows Phone 7 a chance? In which case, we’re definitely waiting to see what hot WP7 smartphone, Droid X-style you can come up with!

It’s obvious that Motorola is holding out to see whether Windows Phone 7 succeeds or fails, before joining that bandwagon.

And Sony-Ericsson is also staying away from Windows Phone 7 until it can see some evidence of long-term viability.

The other thing is that the first release of Windows Phone 7 will have a lot of missing features, which may not look good for the handset maker. It would be better to wait for Windows Phone 8 so those shortcomings can be fixed.

      1. Lacks Apple’s tight integration with hardware

      2. Lacks Apple’s and Android’s maturity and feature set.

      3. Far behind Android (100K) in apps, let alone Apple (250K and rising).

      4. Few handset manufacturers on board.

      5. Previous versions have left the public cold and with a bad taste. I demo’d a 6.5 version and it was the slowest booting, clumsiest to use “smart” phone I’ve ever tried.

      6. Lacks both Apple’s and Android’s cool factor.

      7. Android is free to manufacturers and Apple pays only its development costs that it itself incurs.

Conclusion: too little, too late and for too much.

You don’t have to wait for WP8. There will be updates to the phone sometime after the release. I believe the updates will come a lot faster than the Droid and Iphone on there first release.

If I’m not mistaken, we’re talking about the company that’s slipped more OS release dates than most people can count. and still running a file system due to be replaced, what, 10 or more years ago?

And whose Zune (despite admittedly good reviews – except for the insanely stupid Zune Bucks) has captured a whopping less than 3% of its market.

And whose consumer email program despite a “total rewrite” still requires me to type my hotmail password twice (“wrong password entered”) for the last 15 years – and which more than half the time since the “improvements” started now only lets me select one email at a time to delete. Oh, and a desktop environment which STILL BSOD’d on me last week.

Meanwhile, G-mail just gave me free phone calls to regular phones and video chat (and a DANDY cell phone finder since I gave up my landline) plus other new useful features on what seems like a monthly basis. And Apple nails all their annual release dates within a month or two at most.

      Soooo…. …I’m thinking, uhhh, not.

it doesnt matter if they are just a few manufacturers building wp7 or everyone building wp7.
the world doesnt want it, it will sell a couple of hundreds, maybe even less (KIN anyone) but will be a flop.
with symbian (world leader), android (fast growing), ios (apple niche), rim (corporate stronghold)… there is just not room to a windows phone.
even less if you take that it cost you more and give you less.

      I am a developer.
      I own and android device.
I love windows phone development software (including blend and xna).
I was blowned away with the speed retriving and presenting data in latest proto devices running phone os 7.

Everyone talks about apps this and apps that, how many apps do one downloads and uses? versus how many GAMES???

Yeap, that’s were apple and now even better WP7 will rule the world!

      YES!!!

I’m a developer too and don’t want to work for the poor android or the fashion IoS.
Wp7 is a good platform and yes if it will start to cost a little less, 20% at least, will do as Xbox360 against PS3.
Microsoft may put some bucks in to lower the phone cost and is a great platform overall.
Just to explain better, I’ve had Iphone and is too stupid oriented for me.
I’ve had Motorola droid and keeped two days …too poor and was a flagship.
Wp7 will play his role …
