Nokia N900 Getting Public Android Port Release, Hopefully

Nokia N900 Android Port Makes Progress, We Cross Our Fingers For A Public Release

When it comes to mobile platforms in the United States two in particular recieve a large amount of publicity; Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. The reason these mobile operating systems recieve so muhc publicity and hype is largely due to the amount of hard hitting devices that are powered by them. For instance, iOS has the iPhone 4 while Android has devices such as the Droid X, HTC EVO 4G and Samsung Galaxy S, just to name a few.

Just because they are the most popular mobile platforms doesn’t mean they are the only ones out there. In fact, Research in Motion has their newly launched BlackBerry 6 platform and Microsoft has their forthcoming Windows Phone 7 platform. Nokia, on other hand has several platforms in the works including Maemo, Symbian and MeeGo. However, due to a lack of hard hitting devices, Nokia does not receive as much publicity as the above mentioned platforms, but if you go over seas that changes drastically.

Anyways, one hard hitting device that Nokia does have is the N900. Despite being released nearly a year ago now, it’s 600MHz ARM A8 CPU, 256MB of RAM, 3.5-inch touchscreen display with an 800 x 480 resolution and slide-out QWERTY keyboard make the N900 a more than capable phone. Not quite as capable as more modern phones, of course, but certainly a decent rival.

One thing some may not like about the N900 is the fact that it’s running Nokia’s Maemo platform. Luckily, for those of you who feel this way, a community created Android port for the device has been in the works for quite some time. However, up until now the port had been a bit wonky but thanks to a recently released video we can see that it is quickly making progress. Of course, some things are still a bit laggy but the developers have managed to get incoming and outgoing calls working – a major milestone broken.

No word on when this will actually make its way out but it shouldn’t be too long now.
