Sony Doesn’t Expect A Huge Day One Rush For Move Units [Sony Exec Says That They Expect Moves To Sell Slowly, Based On Word Of Mouth, Likened To Earlier EyeToy Add-on]

Sony senior vice president Ray Maguire told website Eurogamer.net that  they don’t expect big waiting lines and sold-out stores when the PlayStation Move launches later this year. Maguire says that the pending Sony motion control scheme “needs to be sampled” and expects it to sell by word of mouth, like Sony’s earlier EyeToy add-on for the PlayStation.

Maguire said that while EyeToy didn’t start out with a “massive day one”, it ended up being “massively successful” for the technology giant. Maguire, as mentioned, likens that to how Move will do in the marketplace.

Regarding Move, Maguire says that: “[It's] a product that needs to be sampled. You need to get your hands on it. You need to understand it. You need to try it.”

Maguire says that Move will beat the rival Kinect offering from Microsoft this holiday season based on consumer experiences with both motion-control add-ons. He also defended Move, saying it’s not just a “me-too” Wii competitor:

It’s not only about the keepy-uppy and the wishy-washy. We’re starting to think about Move and how you use that in games like LBP or Killzone, some major games. With that attitude it starts becoming less of a novelty and more of just another way of enjoying the games we all know and love.

Remember, both Move and Kinect are coming out this holiday season in what looks like it’ll be an epic battle of motion-controllers. When the dust settles, it’ll be interesting to see who “wins”.
