Kobo eBooks App For iOS Gets An Update
I guess I should preface this by saying that while I have firmly committed myself to Amazon and the Kindle in terms of ebook reading, I still hope for Kobo to be a success. Of course, part of my loyalty to Amazon is because of the simple fact that they were the first I used and they have worked sufficiently to meet my needs after. That said, Kobo is making some strides and despite not having the same name recognition as compared to Amazon, are making a decent stand in this crowded market.

The latest news in terms of Kobo comes in regards to their iOS app, which is available in the App Store and working on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The app was recently updated, which has brought the version number up to 3.4. But perhaps a little more important than the number is what was added — support to import files. In short, you can now import either ePub or PDF files, as long as they are not packing any DRM.
- Add books in the ePub format to your Kobo library from Mail, Safari or add them to iTunes and sync them to iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
- Add PDF documents to Kobo from Mail and Safari or add them to iTunes and sync them to iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
In addition, the latest update had some other fixes as well which included addressing an issue when upgrading from a previous version of the app and resolving a stability issue that came into play when restoring from a backup to another device. Personally I had not heard of anyone complaining of either of those issues, that said, any improvements to correct bugs will always be welcomed.
Bottom line here, those using the eBooks by Kobo app on an iOS device can now take advantage of books from within the Kobo Store as well as import titles of their own.
“No need to be confined by the Kobo app and bookstore; Kobo stands behind its promise of open standards letting you explore eReading from many sources.”
And as you would likely imagine, the imported titles will be displayed on your ‘book shelf’ along with any others that were already present.
