Google Speedbook, the HTC Chrome Tablet We’re Waiting For?

We all know how Google likes to stick its nose in everyone’s business, and that’s not exactly a bad thing for driving up competition, is it? Today we learn that the company is going to launch a new Google-branded product. They’ll call it the Speedbook as that’s the new trademark Google has recently applied for.

So what is it exactly? Considering that Google isn’t making a Google Nexus Two, and given the fact that we already know HTC is building a Chrome-based tablet for Mountain View, then we can only assume the Speedbook is that particular tablet.

Google will not confirm any of this, and according to a recent statement they’re not interested in building any hardware of their own in the near future. The Google Nexus One was a one time deal, and with the plethora of Android handsets hitting the market each month, we really don’t see Google coming up with a better Android phone in the future, especially one that’s going to top everything else out there.

But when it comes to the tablet/netbook business, Google might want to step in especially since it’s getting ready to launch its own computer OS. Chrome OS is going to be available later this year, and just like with the Google Nexus One that showed the world how Google would like its Android platform to be offered to mobile consumers, the Speedbook might be Google’s own Chrome-based tablet meant to show the world how Chorme OS is supposed to look like.

In case the Speedbook does become real, and considering that Google has applied for that trademark it will have to be made, then HTC is probably the designated manufacturer. HTC could be considered a traditional Google partner. It built the first Android smartphone and then it built the Google Nexus One, and we all remember how the phone was plagued with various issues, mainly regarding 3G connectivity. So, in a way, HTC owes Google a great Chrome tablet, hopefully one that’s ready to become the first iPad killer.
