Canon Develops 120 Megapixel CMOS Sensor
Sure, right now we don’t think much of anything about a 12 megapixel camera. We likely don’t even have too much trouble conceiving of 40 megapixels either, thanks to folks like Pentax. But the crew out at Canon is about to blow the doors off digital photography with the announcement of a 120 megapixel CMOS sensor.
Now here’s the really creepy part–it’s not only capable of capturing full 1080p video, but it’s also able to handle burst shooting at 9.5 FPS.
But as incredible as this sensor is, we have absolutely no idea (as yet) what Canon plans to put it in, or how much whatever it is Canon puts it in will cost. I presume it’ll cost big–for that level of resolution people would probably pay through the nose–but how much specifically is as yet unknown.
However, we do know that the Photokina show in Germany is coming up soon, so you know someone’s going to be asking Canon for more information about this unbelievable sensor there. Will we hear anything? No way to know yet. But we know it’s out there…and it’s amazing.

Reference the Canon 120MP CMOS sensor: My first question is why? My second question is why not? I can really understand 9.5 FPS.
Jerry–those are both good questions, and sadly, the first is answered by the second. The second has no real answer. Like the song says, they do what they must, because, they can. For the good of all of us. Except, of course, the ones who are dead.
…But there’s no sense crying over every mistake, you just keep on trying ’til you run out of cake, and the science gets done, and you make a neat gun (censor) for the people who are still alive. ♫
