Apple Looking to Offer TV Show Rentals For Just 99 Cents? [Rumors Suggest Apple In Talks With Networks To Provide TV Show Rentals Through iTunes For 99 Cents]

In terms of digital distribution of content, there are several service providers currently on the market. For computer games, we have Valve’s Steam with utilizes a downloaded client to provide consumers with a large library of games. In terms of music, we have iTunes who also offers digital video content much like Netflix who has the ever so popular Stream Instantly service.

What ever the case may be, unless you’re looking to break just about every copyright law in the book and pirate your content, you’re going to be paying a sum of sorts for your media – be it digital or physical. Luckily, as time goes on and more consumers make the switch to digital distribution, companies are pulling strings to lower the price and make these outlets more accessible to the everyday viewer. A perfect example of such doings is with the immensely popular 99 cent per song offered by iTunes.

However, if rumors are to be believed, Apple is looking to extend that highly sought after price point from digital songs to digital TV shows. According to Bloomberg (so you know it must be legit), Apple is currently in talks with major networks in an effort to offer TV show rentals for just 99 cents a pop. Of these major networks, News Corp. (which includes Fox), CBS and Walt Disney were all mentioned. Exact shows were not mentioned but our source does say some of the most-watched shows on television will be making the cut.

If this is true it could prove itself to be quite successful for not only Apple but digital distribution in general. Considering consumers have no problem paying 99 cents for a song, who’s to say they wouldn’t do the same for television shows? With cable and satellite subscription fees seemingly increasing just about every day, the idea of being able to watch the latest episode of your favorite show for such a low price sounds quite enticing.

Although, if true, we’re going to have to wait and see if Apple manages to actually push out the latest episodes alongside their original broadcasts. If this happens, cable companies may be getting a serious run for their money.

On another note, this would line up nicely as a launch feature for Apple’s rumored iTV.
