Google Goggles Coming To The iPhone “Later This Year” [Google Said To Be Working On Goggles For iOS, Expected To Debut In The App Store This Year]

Using an Android smartphone, one of my favorite apps is Google Goggles. And for those not familiar with the name, this is an app that allows you to search for an object by taking a picture. The Google Goggles app is also referred to as “Search By Sight.”

Sadly though, at least for now the Goggles app requires an Android handset. One that is running Android 1.6 or later at that. But moving forward, iOS users may soon have a version of Goggles available in the App Store. Of course, this is all dependent on whether or not Apple will approve the app. But that aside, David Petrou, a Google staff engineer working on the Goggles project recently stated that;

“We’re working on an iPhone version, and hope to have it out by the end of the year,”

And while I am not using an iPhone (which will be required for the simple fact that it is the only iOS device with a camera) I am still really excited to see this released. And the reason behind that is simple, the iPhone has a large user base. And in turn, by making a version of Goggles available for the iPhone they will also increase the user base.

What that really means is that the Goggles app will improve. You see, at present only Android 1.6 or later users have the app available. And at present Google says that they have a “database of approximately a billion images to work with, and can return a specific result on approximately 33 per cent of the queries it receives.”

In short, 33 percent is not all that great, however more users will eventually lead to better results. So this Android user says bring on the iPhone version of Goggles. And for those who are using Android and still reading this, if you have not already go ahead and check it out, the Google Goggles app can be downloaded from the Android Market.
