Verizon Wireless Rumored To Launch Pre-Paid BlackBerry Plans This Weekend

Verizon Rumor Suggests Pre-Paid Customers Will Soon Have The Option Of Pre-Paid Voice & Data For The BlackBerry

Just like that, another week is coming to an end and a nice juicy rumor rears its ugly head. The latest deals with Verizon Wireless and the possible coming of pre-paid data on the BlackBerry.

As of now the details are fairly light on this one and it seems that we are going to need some more information. That said, the details are coming by way of the Boy Genius, who is citing a “new ninja” and that;

“Verizon Wireless will begin offering pre-paid mobile users the ability to sign up for BlackBerry voice and data plans.”

Pre-paid is always nice. Well, always nice if you do not mind paying more up front for the handset, which in this case for a nicer BlackBerry could end up being on the expensive side. But no contract sounds freeing.

The tipster sent in details which seem to have come from an internal Verizon memo with a release date of August 22nd. This Sunday for those without a calendar. Anyway, the memo reads as follows;

Release Date 8/22/10

RT 802616 – Prepay 3G Pricing & Devices
Systems Impacted: EROES (internal & external)

Overview:  Enables 3G & Blackberry devices with an email and web plan feature/bundle to be supported on Prepay. Prepaid customers will be billed for data similar to postpaid – i.e. mandatory data plan requirements for prepaid customers. (only pulls up monthly plans, brochure view)

RT 800992 RIM Blackberry – PREPAID
Systems Impacted: EROES (internal & external)

Overview:  Enable the offering of a Blackberry device and a email and web plan feature/bundle for Prepay customers  (defaults to monthly plans , brochure view)

Given the wording it does lead one to wonder whether the BlackBerry data will be an option or a requirement for those with a pre-paid BlackBerry on Verizon. Either way, don’t most BlackBerry users want a data plan? Otherwise, like I mentioned the memo is dated for August 22nd, though that does not necessarily mean that Verizon will launch the plans on Sunday. Still, isn’t this technically already possible given you could always buy a phone for full retail and just get service? Or maybe this will just make that official.
