Motorola Droid X Android 2.2 Froyo Update Available For Download, Not Official Though
Just a little earlier today we showed you how Verizon’s Motorola Droid X is out of stock but that doesn’t mean we only have bad Droid X-related news today. In fact we (kinda) have good news too: the Motorola Droid X Android 2.2 Froyo is now available for download, but you’ll have to do the deed yourself.

The Froyo update has been leaked ahead of launch, just as it happened with the Motorola Droid and the HTC EVO 4G so that must mean the actual OTA roll out is on its way to consumers. Of course I have plenty of reasons for arguing against inexperienced Android users to go for the download, but, as always, there are going to be plenty of folks out there not happy waiting for Big Red to offer them the latest Android 2.2 version and will update manually to Froyo.
With that in mind, I’m going to show you how it’s done, or at least how other people say it’s done, since I don’t happen to own a Droid X, nor would I be updating it manually if I did. September is almost here and that’s when we expect the Droid X to become a Froyo-running beast.
So here are the official unofficial instructions for getting your Droid X some Froyo for breakfast:
Step 1:
This is a leaked ota upgrade in the update.zip format. This is not a ROM or a port. This will upgrade both your baseband and your system. You will not need to wipe date.1. The only way this update will work for you is if your phone is back to stock (you MUST be rooted already if you want to be rooted after the upgrade).
2. If you have themed your phone you need to convert it back to stock
3. If you have removed bloatware you must put it all back.Step 2
Do you want to be rooted?1) If no skip to next step.
2) If yes and already rooted skip to next step.
3) If not go here and follow these direction. —–> how to root – thanks to Birdman/rootzwikiSTOP: YOU MUST VERIFY THAT YOUR SU IS LOCATED IN THE XBIN NOT THE BIN
I suggest using Root Explorer as it is the easiest was to do it: Get it in the MarketPlaceopen rootexplorer
navigate to the /system/bin folder and hold down the su file, then select move
navigate to the /system/xbin folder and press the menu button (4 squares)
select edit and then pasteStep 3
So have you gotten back to stock:If Yes proceed to step 3,
if No then proceed below. If you don’t know which files you need or which ones to put back, you can use the sbf to put your phone back in a stock state. You can go here to get details of how to return to stock via sbf file. ——> Droid SBF
After you return your phone to its stock state go to step 3.
Step 4
Now we need to download froyo for the Droid
Link One – Download Now (ed: there are more mirrors at the via link below)
Place the file you have downloaded on the root of your sdcard.
Step 5
Reboot your phone in recovery mode:
1) Hold down the home button and the power button.
2) When the triangle with the android appears press the search button (far right button)
3) Select apply sdcard:update.zip
4) sit back and wait (5 – 10 minutes)
5) restart your device.
Your phone will now be running 2.2.6 (Froyo Rooted)

We’ll be waiting your comments guys about Froyo on Droid X, even if you don’t go through the manual update process above. In case you do, how does it all work for you? Hopefully there won’t be any EVO-like mishaps this time around, but since it’s a leaked build here, you shouldn’t be surprised if things go bonkers.

IT WORKS!!!! just sucessfully installed the update, haven’t had the chance to test it fully but is apears legit!
Using Root Explorer, xbin seems to be write protected, so I can’t move su over from bin for root. Is there something I’m missing?
Never mind – just needed to mount it as writable in Root Explorer.
ITS LEGIT !!! Did the update on my rooted DX without any problems. Just follow the simple instructions at the top and you’ll be running 2.2 just like that !! Awesome thanks again !!
wow. Works flawlessly so far. I’m rooted and running froyo. Is this a dream? Thanks so much!
Well that was painless. Worked great thanks!
So I messed up and never moved the su to the xbin… Am I petty much screwed? Do I need to wait for a new froyo rooting method?
At first I was skeptical but I took that chance! lol.. Sweating droplets.. But all went well the zip file works just save on to your main directory sdcard update and boom!! It works great I tried went on the internet to syfy.com espn watched all the video excellent. I have flash player 10.1 yess!!! I love my droid X!! After install just had to wait alittle while for all to load up after reboot but it worked very well! Thanks,…
Wow it worked. It got stuck at the droid x eye for a few minutes and i got so scared but then it turned on. Amazing!!!
I took the chance. Everything went well. I’m not rooted, and just tried the update… simply but the device in USB mass storage mode, and copied update.zip into the drive. Powered off, powered back on while holding home and power, pressed the right most button when the triangle and android appeared, then I selected to apply update.zip. worked like a charm. My droid x is running froyo with no noted deficiencies. It did not reset my phone. All my emails/shortcuts/programs are still there, and my exchange account is just fine. None of my programs have had any problems working thus far.
Not a lot changes tbh… I have a bit more available memory each time I run the app killer than I used to and that’s nice. Flash works great though… I’ve read some dudes saying it is not very good on the droid 2, but on my droid x, it’s running great. I really am getting decent web experience for once while in the browser.
I purchased Root explorer and went to the /system/bin/ but cannot find a file named “su”. Am i missing something. Also cannot figure out how to “mount it as writable”. These show up as protected files as they have a shield and a star beside them. Can someone help?
