New Sony PSP Ad Takes a Couple of Hits at Apple’s iPhone Gaming
A few days ago we were pleasantly surprised to hear that Sony and Sony Ericsson are planning the first PSP Go Android 3.0 Gingerbread gaming super-phone (wow that’s a long thing to call it) and today we see an apparently totally unrelated commercial starring Sony’s PSP mobile console.

But the new ad that’s available just below is a lot more interesting than you’d care to admit. Sony is finally taking a poke back at Apple when it comes to mobile gaming. Apple has continuously advertised the App Store and all the games found in it, not to mention that each keynote that introduces a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or iOS version has a special section for upcoming apps, games included.
Before we tell you the other side of the story, we’ll have to move pass the hilarity of the clip above and ask ourselves if Sony is prepping its ground for the upcoming PSP Go gaming smartphone with this commercial. Should we expect more similar ads to follow soon? Will Sony take hits at Nintendo and Windows Phone 7 too?
We’ll have to wait a while to see how Sony and Sony Ericsson will play this out, to draw some appropriate conclusions.

Now, the other side of the story is Apple, of course. Apple’s new devices, the iPhone 4, the iPad and the new iPod touch 4G are already upgraded (or totally new) devices capable of support for great games. To dismiss the fact that mobile gaming has taken a serious hit from the App Store is simply not possible. Yes, Sony might have a few better games, but Apple is working on the iPhone 5, iPad 2 and next-gen iPods and these devices will have the hardware capable to offer support for better and better games. So does Sony really have a case here? You know, especially since a smartphone that also has gaming capabilities can also do phone-related things, which PSPs can’t do yet.
Add to that the Android threat, as the Android Market is growing on a fast-paced rate, not to mention the hardware behind some of the greatest Android smartphones out there and Sony and Nintendo have serious a problem when it comes to mobile gaming. I have left Microsoft out intentionally since they’re just about going to integrate Xbox 360 with Windows Phone 7, but we’ll see how that goes later down the road.
What do you think, mobile gaming fans? Do Marcus and Sony have a case? And what about you, Nintendo? How’s your mobile gaming going on?
