Apple Keyboard + Magic Trackpad + MacBook Air = All-In-One Keyboard Mac

DIY Modder Transforms Broken MacBook Air Into Mac OS X-Based Keyboard Computer

Surfing the internet and you are bound to come across interesting projects, and of those managed to get some attention this past weekend. Of course, seeing this just makes me think I could have accomplished so much more, but nonetheless, here is a MacBook Air that was transformed into a keyboard computer.

The project has appropriately been dubbed as “The MacBook Air Project” and seems to have begun a few weeks back when one lucky person managed to score a free MacBook Air. And yes, the Air was already broken when this person got hold of it. Given that, what better thing to do but rip it apart and have some fun.

Luckily, the MacBook Air, with external display and external keyboard attached was still able to boot. Given that, the lucky new owner began ripping anything non-essential out of the casing and installed Snow Leopard. Moving on past the initial OS installation, the project consists of a mis-match of several Apple components including an older white Apple keyboard, newer Apple chicklet style keyboard and a Magic Trackpad.

And as you can likely guess, or see from the images, the older keyboard was ripped apart to use the acrylic bottom as the ‘case’ of the new computer. From there the guts of the MacBook Air were ripped out and placed into the now empty keyboard tray. And low and behold, the newer Apple Keyboard and Magic Mouse appear to sit in that tray fairly nicely.

Where it stands now there is still some work to do, but from the looks of it that work appears mostly cosmetic. Well, that is assuming you want something better than lots of duct tape. But hey, even with the duct tape there is still a working Mac in a keyboard and all things considered it looks pretty nice.

That said, hit the ‘via’ link below and check out the project for yourself. If nothing else, maybe it will inspire you to create something of your own. And if you are worried about being new to the whole modding experience, worry not because so is our MacBook Air Keyboard creator, who proudly stated that “this is the first time I’ve used a dremel.”
