US Dell Streak Likely To Skip Android 2.1 Update
Thanks to the hype surrounding tablets brought about by Apple’s iPad, we have seen a ton of very capable competitors get outed by a plethora of different companies. While some are just over the horizon, a few of them have actually made their way to the market and have been making strides in terms of Android tablet awareness.

When I say Android tablet awareness I mean we narrowly avoided a time where people who don’t know any better would refer to all tablets as an iPad as has come to happen with MP3 players being referred to as iPods.
Anyways, one tablet offering from Dell dubbed the Streak has really been generating quite a bit of hype but just like every other product out there, there have been some user gripes. No, it doesn’t have to deal with a death grip a la the iPhone 4 or screen separation issues like the EVO 4G, but instead it has to do with the phone’s operating system.
While Android 1.6 was a great operating system when it was first released, users still running it have been forced to anxiously await the release of their respective device’s version of Android 2.1 or 2.2 (Google’s latest version). The Dell Streak, unfortunately, runs Android 1.6 which explains the gripes I mentioned above.
If you’ve been paying attention you may know that an Android 2.1 update leaked for the Dell Streak just a few days ago allowing users to grab the update prior to its official launch. At the time, the update was destined for Streak’s running on O2′s network over in the UK meaning or European brethren will most likely be getting the update first.
However, according to Dell, we here in the States may not be receiving the Android 2.1 update at all. Instead, Dell’s Lionel Menchaca says that the company will likely skip right over Android 2.1 and head straight for 2.2.
This would make sense, anyways, I mean why waste your time perfecting Android 2.1 for the Dell Streak only to release an Android 2.2 update soon after.
Anyone out there with a Dell Streak care to share their experiences with the device?

I have a Streak which I am running on AT&T…I have to say, it is a nifty little device. Android 1.6 has been heavily modded to the point that you can almost not tell it apart from Eclair (sans the live wallpaper). But needless to say, I am looking forward to the 2.2 upgrade which they say is coming soon. Other than that, it is great for surfing the web (can’t wait for flash!) and playing games. And no, it’s not to big to make phone calls or hold in your pocket. Plus it’s nice to see the smug look of self-satisfaction melt off of iPhone users’ faces when I whip it out at a party…
I would venture to guess that people interested in the Streak aren’t interested in an e-reader or other tablet type device. They are more interested in a phone that can do tablet things. As such, I wouldn’t consider the Streak a competitor device to an iPad or any other tablet offerings.
However, with the large screen, I’m personally glad I CAN do tablet-like things on this device. I will still refer to it as my “phone” though.
In that vein, I, like many people, will be upgrading an older phone. Regardless of which version of Android the phone comes with, the Streak will be a significant upgrade from my current device (a Razr v3xx). People who already have android phones probably won’t switch to the Streak, and people like me, who have older phones, won’t care what version of Android they get; it’s still gonna be a major upgrade. That Dell will be releasing Froyo/2.2 is just icing on the cake for people like me.
