Verizon Wireless Offering Special Early Upgrades For Those Looking To Get A Motorola Droid 2
Verizon apparently wants existing customers to upgrade to these new Droid phones, and really, why would they not. After all, that means an additional two year commitment from every person who upgrades. And similar to what we saw with the release of the Motorola Droid X, Verizon is offering the same early upgrade eligibility deal for the Droid 2.

In fact, just like the Droid X news, the information regarding the Droid 2 was also buried deep down at the bottom of the press release. The bit was short and sweet, but the details are as follows;
“current Verizon Wireless customers who have contracts ending by December 31, 2010, can upgrade to any smartphone, including DROID 2, without penalty.”
So as long as your contract is ending before the end of the year you can get a Droid 2 as of now and without having to wait and without having to pay any penalty. Well, I guess you will have to wait if you are holding out for the special RD-D2 edition Droid 2. Personally, I am a huge Star Wars fan, but not so sure about that model. Maybe seeing it in person will change my mind a little.
Otherwise, the Droid 2, regardless if you are a new customer or upgrading early will still require a $199.99 purchase. And that price comes after a $100 mail in rebate and along with a two-year commitment. That said, the Verizon offer does actually include any smartphone which could make for a difficult decision considering the phones they currently have in lineup. Just the three recent Android phones alone make for a tough decision. Do you want a hardware keyboard (Droid 2), a large display (Droid X) or the Sense UI from HTC (Droid Incredible)?
And while I would consider this a win-win for both Verizon and Verizon customers, it is hard to deny that Verizon is probably sitting back smiling at the new two-year commitments. After all that means those customers are not likely to move to any of the competition.
