iTV Rumors: New Apple TV Named iTV, Coming with Apps, But No 1080p Playback

Apple to Launch New Apple TV Version, They’ll Call it iTV, Naturally]

It’s not the first time we hear that Apple is going to give its Apple TV another try but this time around we got some serious proof that Cupertino is going to announce a new Apple TV version in the near future. And, unsurprisingly, Apple’s future Apple TV will be called iTV and that only seems natural as Apple is putting an “i” in front of everything these days.

Somehow Engadget managed to get the scoop before everyone else and here’s what they know about iTV so far. The iTV project is actually a similar Apple TV-sized set top box that will offer you an A4 chip, 16GB of flash storage and will cost $99, which is quite an affordable price. The question is, do we really need an iTV? And, since we’re talking about it, do we really need a Google TV?

Moving on with the rumors then, it seems that the iTV box will not be able to offer you 1080p or 1080i playback so you’ll have to deal with 720p clips instead. Why is that? Probably because in a year from the launch of this new iTV we’re going to have an iTV refresh, which will be able to offer you full HD 1080p along with other magical updates. I’m not against this product, don’t get me wrong here folks, but Google didn’t convince me I absolutely need to turn my TV into a fancy computer and I don’t think Apple will manage to lure me into buying an iTV box either.

Apple is already said that will offer app support for the new iTV and we can expect various iOS apps to be either developed especially for iTV or ported from the existing App Store apps. I can’t but think what it would be like if Apple turned the iTV into a console game-like platform in the following years, especially since all its iOS devices can play all sorts of video games, some more decent than others. That would be a reason to get an iTV in the future, especially if Apple could compete against Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo in the console gaming business.

So there you have it, folks, that’s all we know now about Apple’s upcoming iTV product. Are there any reasons to be excited? In case there are, please share them with us.

I am really amazed at the comments of New Apple TV surrounding the lack of a hard drive. I haven’t used my hard drive for the past year. I rip my DVDs with my desktop with ifunia dvd ripper then have iTunes share across my whole home (this works with XBMC as well). I have an iMac for my kids, Asus Win 7 with iTunes in my game room, and a projector/Apple TV in my living room. Why would I duplicate my files five times when I don’t have to? I did drop Ethernet everywhere since wireless proved useless for transferring video in my home. I did borrow an iPad from my work once and I found the iOS worked really well with video and I found myself using it for netflix streaming more than anything else.
