HTC EVO 4G Froyo Issues Spotted, Update Not Flawless According to Customers

HTC EVO 4G Android 2.2 Update Not Really a Great Overall Experience?

A couple of days ago we told you how Sprint pleasantly surprised us all and made Froyo for the HTC EVO 4G available for the public as an OTA download. But it looks like not all the customers getting the update went through a pleasant experience and Froyo didn’t bring only good stuff to them.

We have received lots of comments on the matter and we have spotted various potential issues with the way EVO 4G handles Froyo. It’s too early to tell but perhaps a future update is required to correct some of the following errors:

  • Mobile browser closes when Flash sites are accessed
  • Phone restarts randomly after Froyo install
  • Some Froyo units can’t get the Froyo update
  • Camera not working properly after Froyo update
  • No video recording in some cases
  • Slower responsiveness of the phone after update
  • Swype not working properly
  • Task killer not working properly
  • Text messaging not working properly
  • No Internet connectivity
  • Battery life lasting less than before the update

Plenty of issues here but the more “popular” ones involve the camera and the Internet browsing. Some people have problems accessing some apps, although reinstalling these apps from the Android Market after the Android 2.2 update might fix those problems, and some people find their EVO 4G performing worse than before the Froyo update with the battery life dropping even faster.

While I’m sure that these issues are fixable and can be addressed soon, I’ll also tell you that it’s pretty weird to see so many issues with a freshly launch update, especially Froyo. We’ll definitely be interested to see how the competition will be doing especially since Froyo is supposed to come to the Motorola Droid next.

As for those of you that manually installed Android 2.2 on your EVO 4G you’ll have to know that HTC is still working for a fix for you guys but the jury is still out on that one, so we don’t know when it’s coming.

We’ll come back with more information as we have it, in the mean time we encourage you to tell us more about your own HTC EVO 4G Froyo experience.

Not happy with Froyo… I got the prompt to update yesterday and did so. Ever since, the auto rotate feature is totally screwed up. No matter what I do, I cannot see anything in portrait – only landscape mode – unless I disallow the auto rotate completely in settings. This is a real pain!

    2. Zenko says:

Works perfect for me, everything works I have not found any issue so far although I wish the dock could be customizable but that’s not a technicality.

    3. tribaltech says:

Idk what to say. I’ve Already burnt my hands with the ios4 update and turned my iPhone 3g into a brick. Which made me wanna give up evil Apple anyway and hop onto the Android platform. But here’s its almost the same story repeating itself.my EVO is already one of the worst battery hogs ever. And now to hear these issues and the fact that the bAttery is even more screwed up makes me want to just sit patiently and wait till the idiots at HTC and Google figure out how to make a freakin update work for the end customer. Come on guys for crying out loud this is your bread and butter isn’t it. Its so easy for us android boys n girls to trash Apple but now here we are and the way this is being handled, the joke is on us for sure ….

    4. vdub says:

Battery seems to drain quicker but other than that. Update was flawless. Love all the features especially the ability to surf the web while on a call.

    5. Brittany says:

I was having issues with the phone restarting itself randomly after the froyo update, but after a factory reset my phone is working perfectly. Of course I have to reinstall apps and recustomize my screens, which is a little annoying, but at least there is an easy DIY solution to these issues. A lot of other people are seeing their phones work perfectly after a reset as well.

    6. Michael says:

My update was flawless. But I used the computer rule and did a clean install, I did a hard reset first and then did the OTA update. I then did a restore of all my apps.

I am sorry to hear that some are having issues.

    7. Brian says:

Attempts to send pictures or files via messenger fails with a text message back from Sprint that says the recipient has restricted it.

    8. steb0ne says:

I’m glad I have NONE of those issues

    9. tony says:

I think you pretty much covered everything I’ve experienced. Hope HTC fixes this stuff quick. I choose Android over MAC for a reason.

    10. jbouta says:

Upgraded to froyo day it came out and its worked flawlessly.

    11. jovahnny says:

my update went great but when i updated it i went ahead and did the install by myself and didn’t wait for the notification from sprint.i went through the settings to update phone option. the only issues i found so far are that once my FM radio stayed on even though FM radio showed it was off already. i would unplug the ear buds and it would still stay on. even after i plugged them back in. had to restart phone to fix it. however i have yet to have that issue again. my phone frozea couple of times too but then i pressed the home key and it worked again. and all those things have yet to happen again. so idk, i guess they where just freak incidents

    12. panama67 says:

Home key not working, screen only flashes. I have to use the back key to get out of apps.

    13. dC says:

I guess I’m lucky that the problems listed haven’t been an issue for me. I’ve found that my browsing has become much faster and streaming videos much smoother. I have had issues with typing search topics into Google and it not searching… not sure what the deal is with that. My battery life has been about the same if not a bit better(even using nav since I’m currently out of state) so no problems here.

      *type on my Evo

    14. arthurpjohnson says:

Got Froyo on my Evo and I like it for the most part, although it may be true that the battery burns faster — but I’m also watching more video and I’ve activated the mobile hotspot. No bugs to report, but I must say I was expecting more after the Google superhype a few months back. Still glad I got the phone, but as for Froyo, eh. The browser runs a little faster, period. Still can’t get flash to run. Don’t much care. I think HTC is bringing more to this party than Google, and if this machine were running iOS4, watch out world!

    15. Dave says:

Haven’t had any issues with my Evo after the 2.2 update so far. My brother was having some difficulty getting the 4g to actually turn on properly even in areas with perfect 4g signals but after a reset everything worked out. Not too sure what the reason was for that but we’ve had great luck so far.

    16. rob says:

MY BATTERY IS DYING BEFORE MY EYES WITHIN HOURS. before I was up to a day and a half. I even had the phone powered off when it was fully charged, waited 3 hours, I turn it back on and a hour later I’m down to 75%!?!. This needs to be fixed asap.

    17. Freddy says:

Well, I manually downloaded the Froyo 2.2 update and it went just fine. But as soon as the phone rebooted, the running apps just kept restarting just about a second or two after I killed it with the task manager. Also, the battery began to deplete way faster and charging it wouldn’t pass the 80% mark for some reason and the battery would overheat even while the screen was turned off. I think it was having a problem with one of the apps until it finally found a way to resolve itself and maybe that’s what caused the overheating. I didn’t experience any bugs in any of my other apps. Surfing the web was great. Flash works great as well. I don’t know why, but today I noticed that it was working just fine. None of the issues I just mentioned were still happening. I heard that some people reset their phone completely and got it working normally. I’m glad I didn’t have to. If any other issues arise, I will post another comment.

    18. Autumn says:

Well, so far the problems I’ve discovered since the update are that my camera doesn’t work, my camcorder doesn’t work, and my phone randomly logs out of things. It has also shut off on me once for no reason! I’m really getting pretty fed up with this! Heading to the Sprint store tomorrow to see what can be done!

    19. Claude says:

Before downloading Froyo I waited and read up on if there were any major issues with the update. Then I downloaded 2.2 and really noticed that the browser speed increased and love the new widgets. The only problem I had was with youtube video freezing, but after closing and reopening the app. It ran great and all other apps work great. Hate to here others having problems, I think the Evo is a great phone. Good luck to everyone with their problems.

    20. king says:

I did a manual OTA update and I have had no issues. My battery last about 20% longer too. Very happy with froyo update so far.

    21. antt408 says:

Task killer not working right. Slower response with functions. Battery life shortened. And maybe other undiscovered issues.

    22. ricardo g says:

EVER SINCE I UPDATED ME EVO ON TUESDAY MY BATTERY LIFE IS WAY WORSE THEN BEFORE !!!! IM NOT EVEN ON MY PHONE HALF THE DAY AND IT JUST DIES REALLY FAST…THE BATTERY LIFE IS THE ONLY THING IVE HAD ISSUES WITH BUT ITS FRUSTRATING

    23. Steven says:

All these issues are easily fixable. Just do a factory reset. I know its a pain to some people, but all these problems are because some settings and apps didn’t transfer smoothly to Froyo. The issues are user error, not the update. The only two issues it won’t fix are some people having problems with WiFi, and task killers not working. Most WiFi works, but if yours doesn’t, have Sprint take a look. As for task killers, they screw up your system, so Google made them not work at all in froyo and beyond. Uninstall them and you’ll get better battery life. Do these things and all these issues will disappear. Battery life may also be affected by certain apps. The recent Facebook update had a wakelock, and that caused a serious battery drain. All these issues are because people who have no technical experience are using smartphone and they don’t know how to do a little troubleshooting. If you have problems after an update, DO A FACTORY RESET.

    24. SMBrewer says:

My update was flawless! I checked every issue mentioned in this string and I have none of them. I have many friends that have an EVO. It’s amazing the strong relationship between problems and folks who have rooted. Then they complain the loudest! Also 99% of PC owners know that if you have a problem the first thing you do is reboot. It’s amazing that these seem people can’t seem to figure out that you should do the same thing with your phone.

    25. rodney says:

I updated 2.2 manually via system updates on Aug 3. Since then the web browser is really slow. Flash works but I am having major trouble scrolling! Some times it doesn’t move at all. Also videos are really choppy! Made internet unbearable. Please help!

    26. Brian says:

Updated to Froyo morning Aug. 4th via phone system update at first phone was restarting so I did a hard reset no luck, phone kept randomly rebooting; I hard reset the phone again via clearing settings (powering up holding down vol button) cmd prompt and still no luck, even tried the clearing/resting GPS with MLS code and that didn’t work.
Now the phone won’t even power on, it just gets to the EVO 4g white screen the loops, reboots…now it’s sitting here bricked black screen with nothing working.
Going to sprint store now a VERY frustraited customer!

    27. Eric Folk says:

Those with camera problems do you have Fring installed on your Evo?

My camera was broken a hard reset did not fix it.

The first app I deleted was “Fring” and suddenly the camera worked perfectly.

    28. Ken Nichols says:

AS FAR AS I KNOW MY INSTALL WENT FINE, AND I ONLY
HAVE ONE ISSUE. EVER SO OFTEN, I GET A ERROR MESS
AND IT SAYS: SORRY, THE PROCESS COM.HTC.BG HAS
STOPPED UNEXPECTLY. PLEASE TRY AGAIN… FORCE CLOSE

    29. hunter says:

I’ve had many problems. I downloaded Froyo Tuesday night. Flash would work so I did a hard reset. Now task killer won’t kill YouTube and the internet. I keep getting a problem with playing video error message on many YouTube videos. My camera takes fuzzy pics. My pre recorded videos I have play choppy. Keyboard lags. The multi touch keyboard that came with the update is cool though. Internet is slower, kinda sucks.

    30. romney says:

I just updated to android 2.2 and now I can no longer access the Internet. I get the message:
Sorry! The application Internet (process com.android.browser) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
This is not good. Sprint is telling me to take the phone into the Sprint store and have them reload Android 2.1. I don’t have the time for this. When are you going to have a fix for this. THIS IS NOT GOOD. I AM READY TO RETURN THIS PHONE!!!!!!

    31. KennyG says:

Everything has been smooth for me EXCEPT the internet and streaming video over 3G. Now I cant really browse the web over a solid 3G signal. Also, when i try to watch youtube..it keeps pausing every 2-3 seconds.

    32. Kevin says:

Worse Evo battery life after, hardly lasts half a day now, even after factory reset. I don’t use the facebook app some have blamed. Have tried nearly all fixit tips from web. Fail.

    33. gilbert says:

hi guys. same here having lots of issues specialy with web its slower than before. htc sence restarts like 7 times a day. after a call. after finishin web surfing. after closing an app. and so and so. O and batery drain i get about 2 1/2 hrs of heavy use. (video and apps) flash working ok for a cell phone., hope htc fix this stuf soon.

    34. alex says:

      updated and here’s my issues:
-swype didn’t work, installed, reinstalled, now its so slow its unusable.
-people app crashes all the time – can’t search for people to cal or text, or use the people widgets.
-phone app crashes when dialing and answering randomly more often than not.
-texting is super slow when adding address, people, etc.
-battery life is easily half as long as before the update.
All these make the phone, well not a phone but a cool little iPad – these need to be addressed immediately or android & HTC will lose a lot of customers including me.

    35. smitty says:

Anyone else lose access to their corporate email? All was fine until froyo now no more sync active exchange

    36. BingotheMan says:

Well I updated my phone a few days ago through Sprint notification and it was going fine until the phone reset and went to my main screen with the loading message in front of it for like 20 min when it only said loading for about 2 min before the update. So I reset the phone, same, reset again, same, then the fourth time it came up, but then my Handcent App didn’t work properly, so I unistalled, re-installed. Good to go, just had to re-do my settings. Then yesterday, I couldn’t send or receive pic mail and my battery drained way faster than usual, Handcent went back on the frits, then the phone started to open apps or move my screen around, without me even touching it. Turned it off 4 times and now I cant use the v,b or any of the bottom keys in either messenger unless I turn the phone side. Anyway to unistall this stupid update?

    37. 2g->4G says:

I pull 2.2 download on 8-3. Flawless install. Corp Email required screen lock is now disable/not needed-Yipee. I was spending hours per day entering pass code. Screen lock was invoked at the end of every phone call on 2.1 Froyo does not have this bad habit.

Evo experiencing random reboots now. They seem tied to running Gmap in Nav mode for more the ~10 minutes. Reinstall Gmap, still happening. Rolling resets are also occurring when running other GPS programs.

If I lock the screen the crashes don’t occurs, and Gmap still speaks out Nav directions. I am thinking the video driverfroyo has a issue.

PS Battery life still extremely bad, needs high amp charger circuit AND better power savings on CPU, Video, radios…everything.

    38. natheist says:

Battery life has plummeted since the OTA update. As if it wasn’t bad enough as is. Something is seriously flawed in this device. I will say it was a lot better on battery life with 2.1 I gotta go plug in my phone now as I’m getting the red flashing LED of almost dead. :-(

    39. Jim says:

MY BATTERY LIFE DOWN TO THREE TO FOUR HOURS FROM A FULL DAY BEFORE UPDATE TO FROYO ON MY EVO.

    40. David says:

Sprint Navigation, Voicemail, and few other processes keep starting themselves. I was able to stop Qik and others from the built in applications menu (force stop)

      – I can’t connect to my PC, no matter what options I choose!

      – PIcs are NOT BEING SENT through mail.. I need to post some pics to sell something.

      – Random songs are being played when people call me.

      Useless apps added

The 3G icon is different…. Lol

Why release an update that kills the already struggling EVO battery life.

    41. Angel says:

Battery life much worse. Depleting within hours whether in use or not.

Lag in response time. Not as smooth as before.

Tasks running all the time, even after using Advanced Task Killer. They just pop back up.

Voice dialler used to be very accurate. After Froyo I cannot get it to understand any commands at all. If I say, “Call…..” and say a contact’s name it just comes back with random numbers.

    42. igobykal says:

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this but stock music player does not work properly on the EVO once I installed this update. The artist name is coming up “unknown” and there are not any track number to give the albums (once you find them in the player) the original order they are supposed to come in. I agree with all the other issues that have arisen. Most of us are here because we don’t want to join the “evil” empire of apple, however non of us want to be losers either. Sprint needs to get it in gear and stop jacking up off.

    43. Brian says:

The 2.2 Froyo update for the EVO is terrible. Lots of Force close errors, the text messaging stops responding to the point where you cant enter text in the box. Ive had to reboot the phone multiple times…

    44. John Gillis says:

Since the Froyo update I have wanted nothing more than to bring it back to Android 2.1. I’m actually really surprised I seem to be the only one with the problems I am experiencing.

      1. The internet browsing experience is now terrible. The screen has become less responsive. Flash content makes it even worse. Though it works fine, when I’m on a site with Flash the touch response is even worse. Flash Lite was MUCH better than the regular flash in my opinion. I truly miss the feature where you long press flash content and it lets you go into fullscreen.

      2. Battery life is much worse.

      3. Task killer not really working anymore.

      4. The SMS layout is terrible. Send button
got smaller and it’s in an awkward place. ‘Nuff said.

Those are my main issues and I am really pissed to say the least. I would love to downgrade to 2.1 but I can’t seem to find an option for that. If anyone knows a way I can do this let me know.

    45. Javon says:

Battery down to 70% in less than an hour, with wifi, bluetooth, GPS etc turned off…PLEASE FIX ASAP

    46. Hector says:

      -Camera doesn’t work at all
-phone gets hot while just idling and battery life is worse than before the update.

    47. brian says:

yea this was the best phone I ever had until this update!!! my texting is so slow its crazy annoying! it takes 10 secs just to send a txt and thats what I mainly do!! plus the phone constantly opening all the apps so it makes the battery life horrible!!! I guess Im activating my pro2 until they fix this mess!!!! i cant take it anymore……..

    48. David says:

No streaming music apps work any more…pandora….internet radio….espn radio app…
Browswer is way slower at times….freezing…apps running all the time..
I called and took to Sprint repair and they are replacing my phone… I just want 2.1 back!

    49. Sil says:

Froyo is killing my Android experience. About a month a half ago I switched ATT (iPhone 3GS) to Sprint (Evo). Well, Froyo is making me wish that I kept my iphone. Here is my list of issues:

      1. Internet explorer closes randomly
      2. Gmail doesn’t automatically refresh the inbox like it used to.
      3. Task killer does not work
      4. ESPN ap does not stream
      5. Battery life is horrible (way worse than before)

    50. Uncle O says:

I keep getting the force close and its slower now and my music player stutters when its playing…this sucks bad!!

    51. tk says:

Biggest problem I’m having is I can’t listen to anything on my bluetooth headphones anymore. Anyway to get 2.1 back ?

    52. Chris says:

I did a ful reset as did my brother prior to updating with Froyo and both he and I haven’t had any problems at all. Programs start faster and system runs more smothly. Camera pictures are crisper and love that I rotate the screen almost any direction I want to.

    53. masrlon says:

I just did a hard reset and it seems to be working correctly , seems lol i need to give it more time but i recommnd that for ppl with phone problems

    54. Bret says:

TASK KILLER SHOULD MEAN TASK KILLER

    55. Richard M says:

My Evo updated to .6 from .3 with no problems. However, the 4G on my wife’s Official .6 Evo OTA update on August 3 connects, but my Fix .6 OTA update (on August 10) connects for about a second then drops the connection. We had No Problems connecting in suburbs prior to any 2.2 updates, but neither phone can now connect at home. Currently only her official update can keep a connection to 4G, and we’re in Dallas where coverage used to be awesome.

    56. Y Van says:

My first download straight from my 3g was the .6 download, I skiped the .3 download. I’ve notice the rapid battery lost on my phone, what annoyes me the most is the force close widgets accruing more than once over a short time period. Sprint TV Widget to be precise, whether I have it open or not, it keeps prompting force close repeatedly. My last issue is multiple apps opening themselves over a short time period. Without opening any apps, I would open my advance task killer ant there would a massive amount of apps opened in mere minuts. That could be the case of rapid battery drainage…

    57. Julian Herrera says:

My EVO now does not want to display any of the text input when the phone is in landscape mode. The text input has also become much more laggy and has become a nuisance.

    58. connor says:

My HTC Evo was awesome before this update now it takes forever to send texts the battery is terrible and task managers don’t work anymore THEY NEED TO FIX THIS

    59. Adam says:

SLOW charge + FAST drain confirmed SOLUTION: Reset the phone.

I had some of the bad issues as reported by others. Maybe because I skipped .3 and went straight to .6?

In any case, I backed up apps, etc, but still have to set everything back up again (and I mean everything). I’m sure there are good backup/restore tools out there and I just didn’t use the right one, but setting up the phone from scratch is only a minor pain compared with what I had been feeling with a phone that wouldn’t charge quickly or get past 80% charge and would completely drain after a couple hours. Very satisfied so far, having recently reset the phone, things seem to be back to normal Froyo: smooth and snappy, battery lasting and charging moving at a nice pace.

My only other beef is that I actually liked that the interface only rotated in two directions. It’s annoying now since the response is poor trying to return to portrait after holding it by my side in the left hand (where it goes landscape). Guess I’ll just have to get in the habit of locking it before dropping my left hand to my side. In the back of my mind, I can hear Steve Jobs suggesting that I’m holding it wrong! (and no, I don’t want to completely disable rotation, thank you)

    60. verbosity53531 says:

Just got an EVO from a Sprint store 4 days ago. Updated right away and started testing. Everything was fine – flash worked beautifully on all sorts of sites (told the browser not to ID itself as a mobile browser), screen seemed too responsive (easy to accidentally bump things), and was disappointed by low frame rate in video recording.

Was doing a low-light test outside tonight. First few videos worked just fine. Then one time the LED came on, the recorder didn’t record, and even the back button didn’t work. Had to hit home several times to get out. Then it seems to just start launching stuff. Also noticed that it was getting quite warm in my hand while on. Its off now and recharging – and finally cooling down.

There were some things I was iffy on with the interface (I’m a Windows Mobile user who really likes using my stylus with ink input), so I think this may be going back to the Sprint store in the next day or two if I can’t get this resolved.

    61. Adam says:

      I TAKE IT BACK!

The SLOW charge / FAST charge solution was temporary. Same as after the .6 upgrade, after a day or two, it went back to this problem.

Called HTC and they said call our warranty department or Sprint for a new phone. They have heard of people having this problem, among others and are working on fix, but ‘they don’t tell [her] when it will be completed’.

My advice to anyone with an EVO, don’t upgrade from 2.1 yet. There are just too many issues right now with 2.2, probably since everyone is rushing to get it out in the name of beating the competition instead of making customers happy.

    62. JAG says:

My EVO was great with 2.1! I had the battery lasting almost 2 days once I turned off all the auto syncs. I wish I waited to see the problems with Froyo cause I want 2.1 back! My battery just died and I only had it unplugged for less than 7 hours. Just a couple phone calls and texts… DEAD.

The apps just show up and start running for no reason, stuff I don’t even use like Stocks, Nascar, Qik, etc… I hope they send another update out. They turned an awesome phone into a POS.

    63. alex says:

Having a lot of the same issue as many of you. Battery drains after about 2 hours even while the phone & the screen is off. Very annoying. At times cam corder or cam won’t come on . When I am able 2 record video the playback is choppy. Will try the factory reset. There must be a way to go back to 2.1 . Much b no longer a smartphone.etter experience. Hope 2 be able 2 finish this comment b4 the battery drains.

    64. Gail says:

I hate the new update. My battery life is worse than before, it dies by mid afternoon. My text crashes all the time. Evo was a nice phone, up until the update… dont like it, fix it please.

    65. HappyFroyoUser says:

I can’t say I’ve had any problems with my evo, because I haven’t. My standby time is nearly two days. I have no problems whatsoever. However, when I purchased my evo, it already came with Froyo installed. I’ve noticed most Evo users that complain about battery life never kill the apps there using. OBVIOUSLY you’re going to have your battery die quicker. C’mmon, it’s gotta a 1Ghz processor on a phone, you leave too many apps running it’s sure to kill your phone. Keep in mind, this isn’t a phone, it’s a small computer. If you want a phone, get a phone, if you want a portible tablet, get the Evo.

    66. Getta New Battery says:

Why don’t you guys just purchase a longer lasting battery from Amazon or Ebay, that solved the problem for 3 of my friends that have it. They aren’t expensive either.

We have 3 HTC EVO’s in our home and not one of them plays youtube video’s. Not to mention the battery drains quicker than the gas in a hot rod on the drag strip! It’s embarrassing to have older phones performing better and not to mention plays the youtube video’s we all love to watch (those of us who can actually use the app on our phones). How long before the problem is fixed?

Updated when it came out. never had issues until yesterday night. phone shut off. will occasionally show the boot screen but then turn right back off.

I got my EVO back in November with Froyo already installed. Haven’t had a single problem with it.
