Gorilla Glass Coming To LCD Televisions in 2011
If you’re a Wii player, then chances are the picture below will make a lot of sense to you. That’s the result of a Wii controller flying out of someone’s hand following a particularly enthusiastic Wii session. But if Corning gets its way, you may not have to be so concerned about wearing that strap any more thanks to a move to get Gorilla Glass put into LCD televisions.
We already know that Gorilla Glass is a lot more shatter-resistant than it is scratch-resistant, so putting the incredibly durable glass into LCD screens isn’t a bad idea at all. In all honesty, how could you even scratch an LCD television’s screen, anyway? You never touch it except to dust, and even then with a soft cloth. You’re much more likely to scratch something portable that you carry around with you as opposed to something that stays in the same place all the time.
Thus, it definitely seems like a good idea to install Gorilla Glass into LCD televisions, which have to worry about shattering (as the above pic shows) much more than scratching. And since Corning predicts it’ll have its first deal in place this fall, you might be seeing these on shelves as early as next year.
