Unofficial Fix For Sluggish iPhone 3G iOS 4 Performance Made Known
After the whole issue that involved the iPhone 4′s reception issues when held in a user’s left hand Apple has been receiving a lot of scrutiny from the media. Sure, they issued free cases to every iPhone 4 owner but some have held a grudge against Apple for ever overlooking the reception issue in the first place. Another mess that Apple has found themselves in involved iOS 4 running on the iPhone 3G.

According to user reports, when installed on the iPhone 3G, iOS 4 runs sluggish as compared to running on the 3GS and iPhone 4. Of course, the over clocked processor speeds have been taken into account but the reported performance decrease is nothing to be overlooked. In fact, Apple came forth to announce that they are aware of the problem and are working to develop a fix for the problem.
Luckily, the community has taken to the problem and it seems that there is a quick and easy fix that will supposedly remedy the problem. According to reports going into your iPhone 3G’s Settings, then to General, then Home Button and finally Spotlight search you will find the remedy. By deselecting every option found within the Spotlight Search menu.
Apparently, user reports suggest that this tweak wields immediate improvements while Neowin has been able to duplicate the improvements on two iPhone 3Gs that they tested. Considering you don’t have to install any third party software, open up your phone and tweak the hardware or anything of that nature, we aren’t going to say due this at your own risk as the chances of it doing anything negative to your phone are slim to none.
If you do decide to do this, be sure to tell us how it goes because it would be interesting to see if this is actually part of the problem. For all of you purists, an official fix is expected from Apple at some point in the near future so your woes shouldn’t last very long.

Man do I wish this actually worked! I have tried everything known to man to try and fix my iPhone 3G. I have even gone as far as completely wiping everything from the phone with a factory reset and redownloading iOS 4.01, but my phone still crashes several times a day requiring a hard reset. I have never had a problem with the iPhone 3G or it’s speed up until OS 4. I am now looking into how to downgrade my software to the old stuff before OS 4 destroyed my phone. It makes for a great paper weight, but that’s about it now. If I want to go on the Internet… I would be able to pull up google faster on a dial up 1990s modem than with my iPhone connected to either full 3G bars and even to fast wireless cable (and yes I actually performed the test and sadly my iPhone lost). Thanks for the viral update Apple. You lost a customer for life.
The Apple iPhone has a stunning display, a sleek design, and an innovative multitouch user interface. Its Safari browser makes for a superb Web surfing experience, and it offers easy-to-use apps. As an iPod, it shines.
Thanks for the tip, but I did that almost immediately and my 3G’s performance is still awful. I always force the browsers closed as they suggested, I don’t have internet tethering turned on, have zero spotlight searches enabled. Yet, it still takes up to a minute for an email to open or a page to load, all while connected to my wireless network! This is beyond frustrating. I’d understand if my phone couldn’t receive the new features, but the “upgrade” shouldn’t blow the old phones out of the water, especially considering your iTunes upgrades it for you (which was a huge pain as well). Very disappointed.
Changing the settings in the spotlight search seems to have helped the lag I was receiving by doing normal things, like typing… Thank you! The iOS 4 has been causing a lot of issues with my 3G iPhone. There are bugs, and the phone is constantly freezing making it basically unusable. The incorrect voicemail password indicator is still popping up every time I turn on the phone, or hang up a call. I have considered trying the Android out for reasons like this. I am a huge fan of Apple, but they are really beginning to disappoint me with these iOS 4 and iPhone 4 problems.
The fix appears to make the iPhone 3g better. The true test will be after a few days. But for now, it appears to at least help. It’s easy and free so trying it can’t hurt.
hi tried the iphone 3G fix for sluggish performance with software 4.0 and i had immediate speed improvements. Thanks heaps .!
As i accessed my phone to do this fix i see the sluggish, stop and go response i have seen since the iOS 4 installation. I did the fix and it seemed to have fixed the problem but so does putting it in airplane mode. If only we can choose what iOS we use on our iPhones. 3G cant even use more than half the features on the iOS 4.
It worked for me! I can’t thank you enough. I was ready to give up on this phone!
Just tried it on my phone and holy crap the difference was immediate. Thank you so much.
Awesome. Instant results. This makes sense, because the phone is probably indexing things for later search as you do things. Turning that off would free up the resources used to do that. The 2 consecutive hard resets that I saw suggested elsewhere seemed to have a slight impact, but this helped a lot. Thanks.
It worked, but what am I giving up when spotlight is deselected?
Damd is yah do, damd if yah dont. iphone users are never satisfied, lol.
I have fallen in love with the 3G since I got it 2 years ago. This is my only heavy expense and I truely use every part of this phone. But I am almost in tears of frustration when I have to do anything on my phone since IOS4 was installed by my over anxious boyfriend, who has the 3GS and is not suffering. I truely hope that Apple takes the bull by the horns and fixes this problem and quick because forcing me to upgrade is a good way to loose me as a customer. Also, I think AT&T should give us a break on our data packages considering the product they are promoting is now a paper wait. Why should I pay for a service from a phone that no longer works. My phone was perfect before and now I want to soccer punch the idiot who left us 3G-ers in the dust with this terrible upgrade. It’s disappointing because there is no way they shouldn’t have detected these problems while in testing but they obviously didn’t care, like the reception issues with the 4.
Apple you want to keep my business, YOU BETTER FIX THIS or I”M DONE!!!!
Oh, and this update did nothing for my phone (thanks though), lagging, multiple applications continually closing on me, reception issues, and useless interenet problems are still haunting me on a regular bases.
This sped things up on my 3G, and I’m still running 3.1.3! I was even able to keep “Applications” and “Contacts” selected – could be that the indexing of my emails was the big time-killer.
For those still struggling with performance – try disabling “push” for Calendar and Email, and go to 1Hr updates. Push was also killing my 3G performance and battery life until I turned it off.
my texts still load a bit slow, but the typing doesn’t get backed up like it used to. that alone is a wonderful thing. also everything seems to run a bit smoother and less choppy. quick fix!
