On Schedule, Sprint Confirms Android 2.2 Update For HTC EVO 4G [As Foretold By Leaked Memo, Sprint Announces EVO 4G Owners Getting Some Froyo]
Yesterday, a leaked internal Sprint document showed that “for competitive” reasons, Sprint and HTC were rushing through the Android 2.2 update for the HTC EVO 4G handsets. Today in a press release, Sprint confirmed that the EVO is getting the Froyo update.

The guys at IntoMobile are reporting that Sprint has announced Android 2.2 in a prepared statement. Sprint customers can expect the update to their EVO coming next week, August 3rd. This will be the first phone aside from Google’s Nexus One to receive the Froyo update. You’ve got to imagine that this is the “competitive” reasons that Sprint was talking about. With phones like the Motorola Droid X and Dell Streak knocking on the door, Sprint has to keep things fresh.
Fared Adib, Sprint VP said in the release: “It is exciting for us to lead the industry in bringing the Android 2.2 update to these customers and improve on the amazing experience they receive with America’s first 4G capable phone.”
Some benefits of the Android 2.2 update include full Flash support for the web browser. Likewise, the JavaScript engine, among other things, has been reworked allowing faster overall performance for the phone.
Sprint owes the HTC EVO 4G a lot. This recent quarter, when it was announced, was Sprint’s first quarter in three years where they gained customer. Here’s a protip – those people weren’t signing up because they wanted the LG Lotus Elite.
