Sony Does Well In Q2 2010

Sony Posts Better Than Expected Financial Results, Mainly Led By HDTVs and Video Games

It’s that quarterly earnings time of year folks. Japanese titan Sony has gotten their earnings report out of the way, and it’s actually pretty good this time around. Sony posted an impressive profit of $766 million.

Most market analysts had expected Sony to lose about $149 million. Following the good news that they’re in the black for this quarter, Sony revised their annual outlook, telling investors that they plan to make more money this year than originally estimated.

Sony lost $287 million this quarter last year. Their gains mostly came from the Bravia HDTVs and PlayStation 3 video games. The PlayStation 3 is being reported as the best-selling video game console for Q2 2010, beating out the Wii again. Sony also sold considerable amounts of new games with those new consoles.

An analyst that Reuters talked to said that Sony’s gains were primarily from increased consumer demand for electronics from places like China and South America.

However, despite Sony’s revised expectations for the whole year – some analysts Reuters talked to said that they expect Sony to have a worse Q3 for various reasons, including the end of Sony’s aggressive Bravia advertising push.
