Privacy Concerns Over Nighttime iPhone Uploads
Some users on the Apple support forums discovered that at night – roughly between 1am and 2am – their iPhone was uploading some data back to Apple. The amount was as high as 73MB at one point – and obviously since AT&T has new limited data plans, this may be a problem. Some users are now concerned over what Apple could possibly be uploading.

This has been confirmed that the iPhone is indeed automatically uploading data at night. Usually, it’s been 1 or 2MB, but as mentioned, some users found its as high as 73MB. How do we know it’s going to Apple? More than one user complained to AT&T, who informed them that it was diagnostic information being uploaded by Apple.
Some users are reporting that there is a “Send information to Apple” checkbox somewhere in iTunes when you’ve activated the phone – but other users say they’ve never checked that. Some even say that they specifically did not check it, but their iPhone still updates without their permission.
Considering the size of the data being uploaded (as big as 70MB), some are concerned that it’s more than just usage data. Make up your own conspiracies here: Is Apple uploading your pictures and e-mails? I hope not.

Oooooh There had better be a really good explanation for this… Thanks for the info guys, we’re all anxious for updates! I never gave anyone permission to do anything like this… How can I check this at home to see if it’s happening? Software needed?!
@Jontext
Check your phone bill, either online or in print, then check for any unexplained uploads in the early morning.
Is there a way to find out exactly what these files are? Or are we all at the mercy of Apple to explain themselves….
AT&T says it’s usage data collected by Apple.
Now that it’s a big story (been reported on many other sites), I expect we’ll see somebody manage to find out what that data is.
Something like this?….
2241 MON 06/07/2010 12:59AM Data Transfer Data 13,036 KB CMB1 AT GPRR Out 0.00
2242 TUE 06/08/2010 12:58AM Data Transfer Data 17,651 KB CMB1 AT GPRR Out 0.00
This is the device sending application crash logs to Apple so developers can access the data to fix bugs in their apps. EOM.
