Apple's Magic Trackpad Gets Torn Down, Innards Put On Display

iFixit Tears Down The Brand New Apple Magic Trackpad, Not Much Magic About It

On the outside, most of today’s most highly hyped devices are very beautiful. Take Apple’s products for example, on the outside all we see is some aluminum, maybe a port or two but the overall design is quite stunning. Even Apple haters have been known to give the company credit for manufacturing nice looking hardware (the price, however, is another story). Well, on the inside of this hardware, things aren’t exactly pretty, depending on who you are, but the intricacy of the technology jam packed into these things is truly amazing.

Just about every product that makes its way to market whether its hyped or not gets torn down and thoroughly examined by various hardware fixing firms around the globe. Today, iFixit has announced that they have gotten their hands on the recently released Apple Magic Trackpad and have already managed to tear it apart. Despite the product’s Magic moniker, there isn’t much to be found that is completely out of the ordinary or ‘magical’ within this new age pointing device.

In fact, iFixit has found a Broadcom BCM2042 Bluetooth chip, which is the same found in the Magic Mouse, and a Broadcom BCM5974 touchscreen controller chip. This particular chip is the same one found within the iPhone and iPod touch and is responsible for the critically acclaimed touch input on both devices.

Seeing how the product doesn’t have many components, it should be generally easy to fix especially thanks to iFixit’s instructional guides. But honestly, how would you break thi thing? Sure, it can be dropped but from the looks of it it doesn’t look terribly fragile but I’m sure someone out there will figure out how to break it.

If you’re not familiar with the Apple Magic Trackpad it is a brand new pointing device from Apple priced at $9 that will bring gesture support from their MacBook line up to the desktop platform.
