Motorola Droid 2 Coming in Early August as Motorola Droid Is Reaching End-of-Life

The Motorola Droid is the indisputable star of Google’s mobile platform. Despite HTC creating the first Android devices and despite Google launching the Google Nexus One, the Droid was the most important addition to the Android universe so far.

Motorola, but mostly Verizon, invested a lot into the Droid brand and, as a result, more and more U.S. customers embraced Android thus helping Google become Apple’s main adversary in the mobile business. And Droid lived a fast-paced life, but that life is reaching an end. We’ve seen the HTC Droid Eris and the HTC G1 go EOL just recently and it’s just a logical process for their manufacturers to retire these models.

Verizon is going to discontinue this star player, but it won’t retire its jersey as its follower is coming soon. Here are a few quotes on the Droid and Droid 2 that seem pretty official:

• The Motorola DROID A855 is now in an “end of life” status and no additional shipments are expected to arrive in locations. This applies to all channels.
• A replacement device for the Motorola DROID will be announced in early August.

According to the unconfirmed quote above, the Motorola Droid 2 is expected to arrive in early August, which is only good news for those customers looking for a new Droid in their life. The Motorola Droid X and the HTC Droid Incredible are still difficult to find in stores and the Droid 2 is expected to become a top hit soon.

We have no actual dates for the official Droid 2 announcement or launch date but we can only expect Verizon to make it official in the following weeks.

In the mean time we’ll be waiting for Big Red to roll out that Froyo update for Motorola Droid, Droid X and HTC Droid Incredible, while the Droid 2 will come with Android 2.2 out of the box.
