Apple Safari 5.0.1 Now Available For Download

Coming off a fairly busy day yesterday, Apple seems to be taking it easy with one release today. Or at least one release so far, but then again its still early in the day. As for what we are seeing today — an update to Safari. This latest update has brought the version number up to 5.0.1 and perhaps more important is that it brought end user support for extensions.

And as you may also expect with extension support, Apple has also rolled out the official Safari Extensions Gallery. The gallery is said to be a place where “users can quickly find extensions that add powerful new features to Safari.” Of course, as I would imagine, many TFTS readers are familiar with Firefox and such being the case, already familiar with what a browser extension is.

That said, lets move forward to what you can expect to see, and I must say the gallery seems fairly well equipped right from the launch. Of course, you have your basics such as news in the form of The New York Times and Fox News, weather from The Weather Channel and social networking from the big players such as Facebook and Twitter. Interestingly enough, there seem to be a few available options for Facebook such as Better Facebook, Facebook Cleaner and Facebook Photo Zoom. And of course, there are multiple options for getting your Twitter fix. Others include InstapaperIt, Delicious Safari, Amazon, eBay, woot, Gmail and many many more.

Finally, given the way extensions seem to work, that list is only expected to grow. According to Apple, the extensions are created by using HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. Of course, you do need to become a registered Safari Developer before you can submit any extensions for entry into the Extension Gallery.

With that, it may be a good time to give Safari another look.
