In the early days of the Internet it was used pretty much solely to exchange ideas, talk about various topics and so on. However, now a days, it is used for so much more. Arguably one of the most effective uses of the Internet is the ability to buy something and have it shipped to your house (which I’m sure all of you have done) without every leaving your desk. To make this happen, a large amount of sensitive data is sent through networks including credit card data, home addresses, telephone numbers and more leading to a higher need for security than ever before.

Another extremely popular use of the Internet is social network which I’m sure all of you also have taken part it. Facebook, for instance, has seen itself grown massively now encompassing hundreds of millions of users from every corner of the Earth. While Facebook has done much to make sure the sensitive data passed through their social network is secure, there is still much controversy over whether or not your data is really safe within the network.

Another problem that Facebook has run into and received quite a bit of scrutiny for is the fact that there is no way to really delete a user’s account. If you’re choosing to go this route, pretty much all you can do is deactivate your account leaving it open for reactivation with a simple email. This poses a security threat dealing with identity theft as deactivating an account not only leaves it open for reactivation, but also to theft.

Luckily, Facebook has announced today that they are trying out a whole new system that is sure to calm the woes of users looking to delete their account. While it’s only in test phase, this new feature adds a check box on the privacy settings page that prompts the user to permanently delete an account in addition to all data that was shared using that account.

There’s no telling when this will be pushed out to the majority of Facebook users but we’ll let you know as soon as we do.
