Redeye Mini Dongle Update: It's Recalled!
Well that was quick. It was just five days ago that I brought you the news that the Redeye Mini Dongle, the device that would make your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch into a super-powered universal remote, was being released. Now I get the dubious pleasure of announcing that a large quantity of them have been recalled.
Give the folks out at Thinkflood all the credit in the world, though–they have been on top of this. The salient here, meanwhile, is that if you bought a Redeye Mini dongle with a serial number starting with C0101, Thinkflood has determined that there is “a high likelihood that these units will fail”. The failure rates have been apparently caused by a design change at the manufacturing level which turned out to be ill-advised, thus causing the unit to actually start breaking apart on the inside.
Future units, meanwhile, will not have this design change implemented, thus failure rates should be minimal. If you did buy one of these, you’ve got two choices–return it for a later unit that doesn’t have the design change or return it for a full refund.
Again, I’ve got to give it to Thinkflood for being absolutely on the ball here, being quick with their responses and even quicker to offer both apology and restitution.

I ordered a redeye mini a week or so ago. While in transit via UPS, I received the recall email from Thinkflood. When the redeye arrived today it did in fact have the serial number C0101 involved in the recall. I tried the redeye and it just says “updating firmware” and eventually my iPad goes to sleep. I wonder if this is indeed the failure of the redeye that they’re talking about. This happen to anyone else?
