HTC Super LCDs for HTC Desire & Google Nexus One Now Official
By now you probably know that HTC was pretty pissed off by the Samsung AMOLED panel shortage that prevented the manufacturer to keep up with demand when it comes to the various smartphone models it produces. And today Samsung decided to make official their new Sony partnership that will bring Super LCDs to some of these handsets.

The first smartphones from HTC to take advantage of the new display technology are the HTC Desire and the Google Nexus One (the global version). Super LCDs, or SLCD displays offer an “exceptional natural balanced colour, clear contrast, broad viewing angles and improved power efficiency.” That’s what the press release says but we don’t expect HTC to tell us that the new displays are going to perform worse or better than their AMOLED counterparts from Samsung in an official statement:
“HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand. The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC’s current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance.”
Let’s not forget that Sony also happens to build all sorts of panels for a living so these SLCDs might have a fighting chance on the mobile market. What the succinct press-release doesn’t say is whether these smartphones coming with SLCDs on board will be priced any different than their AMOLED versions or not. It also doesn’t say what other smartphones are going to get the SLCDs panel in the future, so we’ll definitely have to wait to hear more about that.
We’ll also be interested in the first display wars to see what solution is better, at least for a mobile device with a large touchscreen display: an AMOLED panel from Samsung or a SLCD from Sony.
