Android Market Soon To Offer Carrier Billing [Google Soon To Allow Carriers To Take Money Right From Your Pocket For App Purchases]

Do you enjoy spending money on applications but wish that instead of charging your Google Checkout account, you could make Verizon pay for it – and then make them bill you at the end of the month? Great news. Google has changed the Android Market developer agreement and now will allow Carrier Billing on purchases in the Android Market.

According to various users in the internet, this is something that T-Mobile US has had for a while – although the official Android Developers blog doesn’t mention. At any rate, now users of AT&T, Verizon and Sprint can soon be billed through their carrier for purchases made in the Android Market.

These were pretty much the only changes to the Android Market Developer agreement, and existing developers have 30 days to accept the new terms. Unclear when these changes will take affect. For those keeping score at home – this is another feature that Android has over the iTunes App Store.

I think overall it will be good. Google checkout is great and all, but you have to have a credit card or debit card to purchase with. The App Store uses iTunes credit, or paypal, making billing a lot easier and thus, more people are willing to pay. Also, carrier billing means people will get apps now, and pay later, meaning more impulsive buys. The whole refund process does make impulse buys less lucrative to developers than the App Store, but with carrier billing, it may help people buy apps more often. And just think, soon there will be music on the Market too!
