Amazon Posts Sales Numbers, Includes $1 Billion Worth Through Mobile Devices

Amazon Earnings Report Reveals Online Mega Retailer Sold $1 Billion Worth Of Products Through Mobile Devices In 12 Months

Even when the Internet was in its infancy the idea of purchasing things without ever leaving your house without using some sort of catalog or other means of mail-order was unheard of. Luckily, once the Internet we’ve all come to known and loved had matured, it has become second nature to check online before heading out to your favorite retailer or picking up your favorite catalog. One of the companies that really made strides in terms of online sales is Amazon.com.

First launched in 1995 by current CEO Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com started as nothing more than an online bookstore. From the way Mr. Bezos looked at it, thanks to a virtual rather than physical presence, an online book store would be capable of carrying a much larger selection of titles than a typical brick-and-mortar shop. This gave consumers access to titles they never would have happened across, eventually making Amazon.com one of the world’s largest book stores.

However, as Amazon.com expanded, it began acquiring various companies all with different areas of online product sale expertise. Flash forward even farther and Amazon.com has launched their own line of eBook readers (the Kindle) and the world’s most expansive line up of digital ebooks.

With all of this expansion, Amazon.com has expanded into one of the world’s largest retailers making it the go-to stop for products wide and far as virtually everything is avaiablle for purchase through the companies website.

One emerging way to access the Internet, mobile devices, seems to be treating Amazon.com quite well, as proven in their recent Q2 earnings call. According to this call, the online mega retailer had surpassed over $1 billion worth of sales that were done through a mobile device. Jeff Bezos expanded on this by saying that these numbers were put up in only 12 months pointing to the recent surge in smart phone and tablet computer popularity.

I don’t know about you guys but I can’t say I’ve ever ordered a physical product with my mobile phone. Sure, I’ve purchased and download countless apps but never a pair of shoes or something similar. Perhaps I should start, it seems like the cool thing to do. What about you?
