Given that I have already confessed my iPad addiction, what better way than to follow up with a post detailing some of the stats behind the iPad 3G. These are stats coming from AT&T in regards to how many they have activated, which data plan is the most popular and that interest from business users is strong.

These numbers are coming as a follow up to the AT&T Q2 quarterly results and were mentioned during the earnings call. That said, AT&T has stated that they have activated somewhere between 400,000 and 500,000 iPad 3G’s during the second quarter of the year. Of course, given the ship date of the iPad 3G, that really means the last two months of the quarter. Nearly half a million, which is not that bad of a number considering Apple has reported 3.27 million sold. And on top of that, the 3.27 million is a total figure including US and International sales as well as 3G and Wi-Fi only models.
Furthermore, iPad users are coming in between iPhone users and laptop-card customers in terms of data usage and of those that have activated their iPad 3G — 75 to 80 percent have chosen the more expensive data plan which (as of now) offers users up to 2GB of data per month. Of course, its worth mentioning that this 75-80 percent stat covers the more expensive plan, in other words it contains a mix of those on the 2GB plan and the no longer available unlimited plan. Personally I would have liked to hear some further breakdown of how many customers signed up and still have the unlimited plan.
And finally, the iPad for the business user — AT&T was noted as saying that it was “surprising” to see how many are interested. They also went on to further state that a lot of companies are either in, or are considering trials in which the iPad would serve as a laptop replacement.
