Redbox Looking To Expand Online, Possibly Begin Offering DVD's By Mail & Streaming

Compete With Netflix, Don't Become Blockbuster, That Seems To Be The Strategy Of Redbox

By all accounts the current Redbox setup seems to be pretty successful. Of course, I am only saying that from personal experience. You see I am a Redbox customer myself and almost without fail I end up having to wait for a customer or three to finish before I can get my turn in line. That said, it also seems pretty safe to say that kiosk rentals will not be popular forever. Especially in todays digital world.

Mitch Low, President of Redbox recently went on record and stated;

“The way we look at it is, How can it help us deliver to our customers things we can’t do in our kiosks? What role might it play in expanding our selection?”

And to further add to that, Redbox is interested in what Netflix seems to be shying away from a little bit — actual DVD’s.

“The disc business has a great future,” Lowe said. “Especially with Blu-ray coming out. It extends the life.”

Its interesting to see how one company appears to be moving away and the other towards — and almost like the are going to meet in the middle with similar offerings. Of which that is what I hope to see happen. Like I mentioned, I am a Redbox customer. But I am also a loyal and long term Netflix customer. At this point its not likely that I will cancel Netflix anytime soon, but at the same time I want Redbox to move into Netflix territory and begin offering some serious competition.

Unfortunately, a little bit of speculation is what we have at this time. Otherwise, some have suggested that Redbox may end up partnering with a company such as Sonic Solutions who are already found in select television and DVD players. And more importantly, a company that already has the rights to thousands of movie titles. In other words, they could be a good jumping in point for Redbox.

And just like that, the disc is not dead yet.
