Netflix Announces Plans To Bring Streaming Movies & Television To Canada

Netflix Expanding Outside Of US Market, Movie & TV Streaming Coming To Canada In The Fall

For the first time Netflix is getting ready to move outside of the US market. Granted they are not traveling all that far, but hey, I suppose those in Canada will be happy to hear the news. The news is official and has been delivered by way of official press release and Twitter, they are the same nowadays. Aren’t they?

Unfortunately though, they have not spilled everything in terms of details.

“Netflix is launching in Canada this fall! Go to www.netflix.ca to sign up to receive an email when the service has launched.”

What they said, visit Netflix.ca and trade your email address for the privilege of a future update. Otherwise the press release made mention of the service coming “later this year” and “the fall.” Either way, those in Canada can now look forward to streaming movies and television to their device of choice.

Other details include the initially the service will be available only in English, though a French language capability will be added “over time.” And interestingly enough, this will not only be the first time Netflix is offering service outside the US but also the first time they are offering the service as streaming only. In other words, those in Canada will not have the option for getting a DVD by mail, but they will get the ability to stream an unlimited amount of content. As for device support, so far that has been described as being compatible with the Mac and PC as well as a “range of consumer electronic devices.” And fair warning if those in Canada get iPad support as that is the almost the sole reason why I go over 2GB each and every month.

With that, we are still awaiting word on pricing. And even as someone outside of Canada — I look forward to seeing what Netflix has planned. After all, its not possible to get a streaming only option here in the US. In the US we can get a DVD only plan for $4.99 a month or an unlimited streaming and one DVD out at a time plan for $8.99 a month. It will be interesting to see where they price streaming only.
