iPhone DSLR Breaths New Life Into Device's Digital Camera

iPhone DSLR Mount Allows Mobile Phone Pictures/Video Taken With SLR Lens

For much of the camera’s life, users have been generally utilizing the film consuming kind as opposed to digital. However, as of late, the low operating costs and countless other benefits of digital cameras have forced their analog counterparts into more of a niche market where only hardcore photography enthusiasts need apply. Despite the benefits of digital cameras, it wasn’t until the late 1990′s that the first commercially available models made their way onto the market for a price tag that was palatable at least by professionals.

Now a days, digital cameras have become extremely cheap and virtually every consumer from high to low end can purchase very capable digital cameras at a very palatable price.

With the success of the digital cameras as we know it today, the technology has found its way into various niches with digital camcorders and webcams running rampant at pretty much every electronics retailer.

One new method of taking pictures that is a bit less traditional but has gained a considerable amount of popularity is with cell phones. The first digital camera touting cell phone was the J-SH04 released by Sharp in the year 2000. This device featured a CCD digital camera sensor which compared to today’s standards isn’t anything to gawk at but at the time was a highly publicized accomplishment.

In this day and age, digital cameras have found their way into just about every cell phone on the market with more powerful phones like the HTC EVO 4G and Droid X featuring 8 megapixel cameras complete with LED flash. Another popular device that features a digital camera is the iPhone 4.

With just a 5 megapixel camera, the iPhone 4 isn’t exactly the most capable picture taking phone on the market but thanks to a collaborative project between OWLE and Vid-Alantic, that may change very soon.

What you see above is what has been dubbed the iPhone DSLR mount – a handset mount for the phone that allows users to take still images along with video utilizing an SLR lens. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when we will see this or at what price point, but we’ll keep you updated.
