Ever since webcams became commercially available, and more importantly cheap, Internet enabled users have been utilizing these devices for a plethora of different applications. One may view the traditional webcam as a cheap means of creating digital content while others may use it as one of the most effective communications tools on the market. Sure, you can call up your loved ones and here their voice no problem, but it doesn’t compare to the emotional experience of being able to speak to them face to face, even when on opposite sides of the world.

It’s no secret that video conferencing is quickly becoming one of the most widely used forms of communication especially thanks to extremely popular software like Skype and the inclusion of webcams in virtually every new laptop (and some desktop monitors) that hit the market. However, video conferencing and making movies isn’t the only thing that these budget digital cameras can be used for and one 17-year-old Russian student by the name of Andrey Ternovskiy had a use for them that would change the way users interact for good.

If you’re not familiar with Ternovskiy’s creation dubbed Chatroulette, let me give you a quick breakdown. Chatroulette is a website that allows access only to users with enabled webcams. Once on the website users can then click the next button to browse through other users and, in theory, meet people that they would have previously never known to have existed.

Unfortunately, seeing how the Internet is a widely unmodereated medium, users flocked to the website with their not safe for work parts exposed leading the website to become extremely unfamily friendly.

Despite these troubles, Chatroulettte has been deemed a success and has spawned an unaffiliated iPhone application by the name of iChatr, which we told you about not too long ago. Much like the desktop version, iChatr utilize’s the iPhone 4′s front facing camera to match users up with strangers at random.

Unfortunately, Apple has pulled the ap from their App Store for the same reason that Chatroulette has often been criticized: “a number of users exposing themselves during the random video chat sessions.”
