Verizon To Retire Original Droid
On the website DroidForums.net, a leaked internal Verizon memo has come out – and if accurate, it shows that Verizon is setting a number of phones, including the first Moto Droid, to End of Life, meaning no new stock will be coming in and the phones won’t be for sale.

According to the list, here’s the whole list of phones being retired:
- Motorola Devour
- Motorola Droid
- Nokia Twist
- BlackBerry Tour 9630
- Samsung Knack
- Samsung Smooth
- Samsung Intensity
- Samsung Saga
- Gateway LT2016U (mobile-connected netbook)
The first Droid is likely being EOL’ed to make room for the Droid X and rumored Droid 2 – although it is a bit dishearting to see the phone sent out to pasture when it’s only been out for nine months. The Motorola WX445, which was spied in leaked pictures, likely will be the new low-end phone, replacing the Devour.
Regarding the other phones – the Bold is out now on Verizon, hence the Tour 9630′s replacement on Verizon. The Nokia Twist also came out in the same timeframe as the first Droid. The Samsung Knack and Smooth are both feature phones – while the Intensity and Saga are those low-end smartphone/featurephones that are popular with people who like to text and surf Facebook on the go. Will those phones be missed? Doubtful.
Between the Droid X, and all the other rumored stuff going on with Verizon’s lineup (HTC Supersonic with 4G coming in November?), it’s obviously that Verizon is retiring the older stuff for (as the internet put it) “the new hotness”.
