Modders Bring Froyo To HTC Desire [Google-less Nexus One Gets Android 2.2 Port, Even Includes 720p Recording And HTC Sense]

The folks at HTC haven’t released any plans to bring Android 2.2 to the HTC Desire (also commonly known as the Nexus One, sans the Google branding), but the modders at the xda-developers forums have managed to get a Android 2.2 ROM running on the Desire handset. Even more surprisingly, it comes with HTC Sense!

htc desire 400

This mod comes to the public by way of modder “udk”, who apparently got it from HTC – as the screenshots from the ROM show it branded with “HTC Confidential” watermarks. At any rate the ROM appears legit, as mentioned earlier, it even comes with HTC Sense. What else does it enable?

It apparently enables 720p video recording on the handset. udk was kind enough to take some sample videos with the HTC Desire and the video quality is impressive, although the framerate is a bit laggy and as I always seem to find with these camera phones – the microphone quality is downright awful. But still – the 720p is better than the 800×480 that the HTC Desire previously recorded in.

Here’s the sample video, embedded below:

What’s with this ROM coming from HTC? We already know that the HTC Desire is headed to several smaller, regional carriers in the United States and Canada. Surely, these folks would love to get their hands on the Android 2.2 with 720p video recording and the mobile hotspot feature.

Those interested in getting their hands on the ROM can check the xda-developers forum, located at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720294.

    Really a nice contribution for reader but i think u forget to include some point such as………..

    * Disappointing video quality
    * Limited storage available to the user on the system partition (you are left with only 120 MB for installing apps)
    * No DivX and XviD video playback
    * No voice dialing
    * Non hot-swappable memory card

      @josef reon

      I think the video quality is fine – it’s just laggy, only at 24fps or so.

      As for the other drawbacks, you may want to buy another phone. This port is more or less something nice for current HTC Desire owners – not a selling point for potential HTC Desire owners.
