Sony To Release 3D PS3 Blu-Ray Playback Firmware Update In September

Playstation 3 To Get 3D Blu-ray, Image, PlayTV And YouTube Playback With Firmware Update This September

While 3D display technology has been around for quite some time and characterized by those infamously goofy 3D glasses, the display technology wasn’t really put under the spotlight until the success of James Cameron’s Avatar 3D was made apparent. Now, it seems like everyday a new television or projector manufactuer is coming forth to announce the latest and greatest 3DTV or 3D projector.

The only problem with these 3D-capable televisions and projectors (other than that they require 3D glasses) is the fact that they are somewhat high priced. Of course, this should be a given due to the display technology being so early in its lifespan where a premium is expected.

Then again, 3D-skeptics can pooint to the fact that there are probably more 3D-enabled televisions and projectors on the market than there is 3D content collectively. Sure, some TV channels like ESPN have announced that they will broadcast certain things such as sports in 3D but other than that and a select number of 3D Blu-rays, there isn’t much.

Luckily, for early 3D adopters, many companies are looking to change that. Sony, for one, has long been touting 3D gaming with their Playstation 3, showcasing several games at E3 that take advantage of the technology. However, 3D gaming isn’t the only thing Sony is concerned about as their Blu-ray format is one of the best mediums for 3D content due to its large storage capacity.

The reason I”m telling you this is because Sony has just announced that they will be releasing a firmware update for the Playstation 3 this September that will allow the home game console to properly render 3D Blu-rays. But it doesn’t stop there – Sony has also let us know that the firmware update will allow the PS3 to render 3D images, 3D broadcasts from PlayTV and even 3D YouTube videos.

But honestly, does anyone out there who doesn’t own a Ferrari own a 3DTV?

well actually, there are thousands of people with 2007 and later Mitsubishi DLP TVs that are 3D ready. You can have a very large 3D TV by Mitsubishi for less than $1,500. Many people have 3DTVS and don’t even realize it. They just need to get the adaptor and glasses.
