HTC EVO 4G, HTC Droid Incredible & Others to Get Android 2.2 Froyo by December

HTC Explains Froyo Updates Will be Done by December, We Hope Sooner

Android 2.2 Froyo is Google’s latest mobile OS version that was announced back at Google’s I/O event this year. Until now only Google Nexus One owners have received the official update and it might take a while until the main Android manufacturers are going to bring it to their flagship phones.

LG is launching a new smartphone line, the Optimus, and the first two devices are going to come with Froyo on board although we have no idea when that will happen.

Motorola is working on the Froyo update for the Droid, Droid X and Droid 2 and HTC has confirmed that it will offer the update to some of its smartphones. But while Motorola has already offered timeframes for its Froyo upgrade, HTC wasn’t able, until just recently, to tell us when some of its hottest phone will be upgradeable to Froyo.

The HTC EVO 4G and the HTC Droid Incredible are the hottest Android devices available right now in stores and we’d expect them to be the first ones to be updated to Android 2.2 while other models will have to wait a longer period of time, possible until December 2010 to run Froyo.

This news comes straight from HTC officials:

“It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That’s not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they’re all running properly on the OS now that it’s a new version. And then to make sure that it’s running on our hardware as well as we expect.”

So what if there was no Sense UI to deal with? Would a Froyo update arrive a lot earlier?

In an earlier report we were telling you how Sprint wants to offer EVO 4G owners Android Froyo in the following weeks. Can we assume that the HTC EVO 4G is going to be the first device to get it? And on the same, note we’ll remind everyone that’s currently playing with an older HTC Android model that an upgrade to Froyo will not be possible.

I do not understand. Why would sprint tweet 2.2 coming very soon to the HTC evo. Dec is not soon. I would think if they tweeted that then it would be in a month or sooner. What do other people think?

i grew tired of waiting for the flash upgrade on my Palm Pre and switched over to the Evo, thinking Froyo would be available soon, and now, it may not be available till the end of the year is rubish. besides the size of the screen, i see NO improvements from the Pre to the Evo.

      GRRRRRRRRR… EVO, Broken Promises ALREADY!

This is so frustrating. VZW trumpeted Flash capabilities in their marketing for Droid to be available in 1Q 2010. That’s the main reason I selected Droid.
