iTunes Accounts Get Hacked, You Might Be in Danger of Buying Crappy Apps & Not Even Know It

Apple Adds New iPhone Issue to Already Long List: iTunes Has Been Compromised

There’s a new Apple iPhone-predicament in town and it seems to be quite an alarming one. The unthinkable has been thought apparently and some hackers out there decided to hack iTunes. I imagine that’s a tough thing to do especially since Apple prides itself for not letting any kind of threats inside its operating systems, whether Mac OS or iOS.

But that doesn’t mean a platform like iTunes can’t be hacked, and, in fact, that has recently happened putting in danger every iTunes account holder that has his or her credit card on file with the company.

So what happened exactly? Well it seems that some developers managed to hack iTunes accounts and use them to purchase their applications. Naturally the application went to the top of the charts, which will only make them even more popular, at least temporarily until Apple removes them.

It seems that these developers, and they’re more than just one, used their application as App Farms to steal people’s money. What generally seems to happen is that the hacker buys a few low cost applications bundled with a more expensive one. In fact users have reported having spent from $100 to $400 on apps they don’t know about.

The hacks seem to have happened for the course of the last few weeks although it looks like they started even before that time too. Most developers that build such App Farms are originating from Asia but we don’t have all the details available just yet. In order to get you account details the hackers apparently use images from the web as app icons and point their support link and websites to non-existing pages.

In order to make sure your account hasn’t been affected by the hackers it might be a good idea to change your iTunes password and make sure you remove your banking details from your account and have it replaced with iTunes gift cards where available.

Apple will probably address the matter immediately as some of this apps have been already removed and others will go through the same process when found. We’ll definitely be waiting to see what general measures Apple will install in order to protect iTunes users from this sort of thing from every happening again.

If you also own other smartphones that have App Store support you might consider making sure those accounts are safe to as these kind of App Farms could appear anywhere from now on.
