OnStar And Google Maps, Together

OnStar Users Now Can Receive Google Maps

File this one under “Interesting Ideas That Don’t Have A Lot of Application On The Surface”, but OnStar users are now able to use Google Maps on their OnStar systems.

Now, OnStar users can do searches on Google Maps for most any location they’re planning to visit, and then remotely send the resulting map to their OnStar systems for use later.

Admittedly, that’s a really exciting idea: go searching for some place, find a map to it on Google Maps then fire said map into your OnStar system so you can pack a lunch, slide into your car and head out on your newest adventure. But I find myself a bit confused–why not just punch the address of your find into your standard dashtop GPS and let that show you where to go? And what happens if your Google Maps route changes? Will it readjust on the fly?

It may not have the panache of “fire a map into your OnStar”, and I suppose if you’ve already got an OnStar it’s worth it to give it something else to do, but I’m pretty happy with my current TomTom, so getting people to adopt this idea may not be so simple…at least, as long as the GPS satellites work….
