Google Nexus Two Not Coming Anytime Soon

Eric Schimdt Says Google Doesn’t Plan Google Nexus One Successor; Doesn’t Try to Beat Apple Either]

The Google Nexus Two is not something new for your Android-loving ears. You’ve heard about such phone a while ago and, we have just recently asked ourselves what happened with the device.

Earlier this year we told you that Motorola was going to build a Google Nexus Two handset for Google which was supposed to be somewhat similar to the Motorola Droid, or so said the rumors. Google never made any statement confirming or denying such plans and the tech world seemed to have forgotten all about the Nexus Two.

In the mean time Motorola has already revealed the Motorola Droid 2, a Droid successor that could have easily been called the Google Nexus Two. And just yesterday Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt talked to the Telegraph and, among other things, he elaborated on the Google Nexus One but also on the Google vs Apple rivalry.

Apparently Google is happy with what the Google Nexus One did for them, and they don’t want to do a second Google Android phone. But here’s the full quote:

“The idea a year and a half ago was to do the Nexus One to try to move the phone platform hardware business forward. It clearly did. It was so successful, we didn’t have to do a second one. We would view that as positive but people criticised us heavily for that. I called up the board and said: ‘Ok, it worked. Congratulations – we’re stopping’. We like that flexibility, we think that flexibility is characteristic of nimbleness at our scale.”

We’ll probably disagree with Schmidt, without knowing all the inside information that he must have, and we’ll say that the Android universe would have evolved quite nicely even without Google making a phone. It’s clear that Android’s main adversary is the iPhone, but that also happens to be the inspiration for everything Android: touchsreen interface, large display, application store, etc.

The real reason for not making an Android phone anymore, if you ask me, especially when your name is Google, is, basically, not being able to create an Android best-seller yet. This is something we have talked about before. We will never see a single Android device, and I’d love nothing more than to stand corrected in a few months, that will sell as good as any iPhone model. We had the Droid, then the Nexus One, HTC Desire, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Droid Incredible, EVO 4G, Samsung Galaxy S and Motorola Droid X steal the spotlights for a few months, only to be replaced by the next best thing. Sure a Google Nexus Two will be a powerful device, which will make quite an impact. But would Google sell 1.7 million of them before the next hot Android device hits stores?

And Eric Schmidt made sure he took some hits at Apple during the interview. Here are some quotes:

“We don’t have a plan to beat Apple, that’s not how we operate,” Schmidt says. “We’re trying to do something different than Apple and the good news is that Apple is making that very easy.”

“The difference between the Apple model and the Google model is easy to understand – they’re completely different. The Google model is completely open. You can basically take the software – it’s free – you can modify whatever you want, you can add any kind of app, you can build any kind of business model on top of it and you can add any kind of hardware. The Apple model is the inverse.”

Later, asked how Google will react to Apple’s iPad, he adds firmly: ‘We don’t react.”

So Google doesn’t want to beat Apple? Well that’s such a nice, positive thing to say, although, at least from where we’re seating, that’s not what we’re seeing.

All in all, Android lovers, we learned today that no Google Nexus Two is going to be made in the foreseeable future and that Google has no plans of beating Apple. What are your thoughts on these matters?
