HP & Palm Announce Completion Of Acquisition, Promise Of Smartphones, Slate PC's & Netbooks To Come

$1.2 Billion Later HP Has Officially Wrapped Up The Palm Acquisition, First Signs Of Palm On HP Website Begin Appearing

Complete with an official press release, and also arriving on the day we expected — HP has officially completed the acquisition of Palm. The first signs that we are seeing appear to be positive, but time is going to tell just how successful this will be for HP. And perhaps more important for the Palm-loyal — whether or not the Palm name will survive in the long run.

Which brings me to the first point, the acquisition has been completed and the first signs of Palm on the HP website have begun to show up. So far its nothing crazy, instead we are finding that the Pre and Pixi are listed on the Small & Medium Business page along side the iPAQ phones. And yes, they are all still branded as Palm and Palm alone. Interestingly enough, the Palm website has not changed at all. Of course, having just been made official, perhaps I should say that the Palm website has not been changed yet.

Touching back on the acquisition, that seems to have played out as expected.

“HP today announced it has completed its acquisition of Palm Inc. at a price of $5.70 per share of Palm common stock in cash.”

Additionally, Jon Rubinstein is going to remain on and will serve as the head of the Palm global business unit under HP. One other nice little perk comes in the form of further confirmation on the future.

“Palm will be responsible for webOS software development and webOS based hardware products, from a robust smartphone roadmap to future slate PCs and netbooks.”

You see, they are once again mentioning slate PC’s and netbooks. Of course, the smartphones come more as a given. Otherwise that previous statement also seems to commit to the future of webOS.

With that, I for one am looking forward to seeing what will come out of this merger. Though, truth be told I would be lying if I did not say that I wasn’t the slightest bit nervous.
