World Cup 2010: England Goal Disallowed on Good Grounds; Technology Proves It
As much as I love technology and gadgets I happen to like football (that’s soccer for some folks) too. And what better way to enjoy it than by watching the South African World Cup 2010? It’s a pity though that we still rely on humans to judge the game especially now that we have all this technology around to help.

Sure, some will argue that the referee of the game is also meant to add salt and pepper to the game. Tell that to the Brits who were disallowed a goal against Germany. Or tell that to Mexico which clearly had a goal scored against them from an offside position! Even if the better teams, Germany and Argentina, respectively, did win in the end, it’s not fair-play at all to ruin a game with a wrong human decision.
As you can see in the picture above, the second goal that England happened to score was disallowed on good reason as the ball never crossed that white line there. But then, leaving silliness and jokes aside, we’d really want to see FIFA let tech into football games to improve the performance of some of these referees.
It looks though that FIFA is (finally!) going to consider adding tech to the game. Sepp Blatter, the ruler of all things good and evil in the football world, in short, FIFA’s president, is finally ready to start a new “discussion about technology.”
FIFA is probably going to rely on goal-line technology in future games (read: future World Cups probably) but it won’t use the same tech when calling offsides which often lead to some goals being scored. Would a referee watching the replay of a game and raising an extra flag to help his colleagues ruin the game? Will it slow it down? Kill its charm? I don’t think so. Other sports use technology and it’s still very fun to watch them.
We’re definitely going to keep an eye on all this sports-related tech for you as the game of football is just about ready to become even more interesting should referees be finally able to do what they’re supposed to do in the first place: make good calls during a fast-paced game and bring even more fairness to the game.
Is your team progressing through to the final? Has it been affected by bad ref calls yet?
