Sony: No PS3 Price Drop Soon

With PS3 Finally Making Money For Sony, Don't Expect A Price Cut On Console Soon

One of the biggest bummers in consumer electronics is when you buy something and then the next day the price drops. If you’re waiting for another PS3 price drop to follow last year’s – don’t bother. With the PS3 now making money, they’re comfortable with the $299 price.

Up until they started making the new PlayStation 3s, Sony was losing money on every console sold (don’t worry, they made it up on the licensing rights for the games). However, with cheaper hardware now being used in production of the consoles, they’re actually making a nice profit on each console sold. They’re totally okay with that, says Shuhei Yoshida – Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios. He said this in an interview with IGN.

Yoshida-san added that with upcoming developments like 3D and the PlayStation Move, Sony doesn’t really see the point of further lowering the price. They’re also in a pretty nice spot right now, as they sit head-to-head with the Xbox 360, not counting the cheap Arcade Xbox 360s at $199.

It’s good to see Sony comfortable with the PlayStation 3, but a bit unfortunate for anybody hoping to pick up a PS3 at $250 or something cheaper than it’s current $299.
