Former Sony Head Predicts New Consoles In 2012-13 [David Reeves Predicts New Consoles in Three Years, Imagines Xbox Being More Family Friendly]

David Reeves, former chief of Sony Europe, sat down and chatted with The Guardian’s game blog. He’s know at Capcom, but obviously he has a lot of experience in this market. He told The Guardian that he believes that we’ll see new consoles in 2012-13. This obviously is decidedly different from the “ten-year cycle” that Microsoft and Sony promise us.

Microsoft and Sony are planning on releasing a new console around 2015-16, but a lot of people – but internet commentators and more proper pundits believe that both will release new hardware before that. Reeves didn’t cite any inside information, but he said he believes the hardware manufacturers are working on something.

Reeves went on to say that a hard part with developing new consoles is when to decide on what processor to use. Reeves said that often during the development process, you have to decide on a new processor for your console – but obviously the hardware will keep moving after you’ve declared which hardware you’re going to use in your console.

Here’s what’s interesting – Reeves expects Microsoft go to more family friendly with the next Xbox. He told the Guardian:

If you map it out the Xbox 360 is right up in the corner and it has certain types of games associated with it. And Microsoft knows that in ten years time they can’t be there, they have to be appealing to families. And I reckon that strategically it’s absolutely the right move. It’s almost like two steps back and one step forward. They are right to separate Kinect from everything else.

Interesting opinion for sure.

Do you think the consoles will live out their “ten-year lifecycle”? (New Xbox in 2015, New PlayStation in 2016).
