Android Gingerbread 3.0 Spotted in the Wild?

Android Gingerbread 3.0 Features Uncovered; New Android OS Running on Smartphones by the End of the Year?

Well stop the presses everyone, as it looks like there’s a new player in Android Ville! We call it Gingerbread and it’s the next Android version which is supposed to hit at some point by the end of the year. This is not the first time we hear Gingerbread is coming this year and those HTC Vision (aka Project Emerald) rumors might just have gotten a little more credible. And I bet everyone, good or bad, will want to snatch Gingerbread; just have a look below!

In fact it seems that Gingerbread is going to arrive at some point in October which is really crazy considering that Android 2.2 has just been made available and, besides the Google Nexus One, no other phone has official support for it.

The news comes all the way from Russia apparently (translation courtesy of UnwiredView) and we have various details about Android 3.0 which will make you consider whether you should get one of the current hot Android handsets or wait for Gingerbread to hit the streets first.

Here’s what Gingerbread-ready devices will be able to offer you:

  • 1GHz processor
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 3.5-inch touchscreen displays or better
  • 1,280 x 760 resolution for devices with over 4-inch panels
  • (Retina Display who?)
  • New User Interface to replace any other custom UIs which will disappear thereafter (no more Sense, Motoblur, Timescape, not that we will miss them in particular)

So what will happen to Android 2.2? Well it is believed that the top of the line Android smartphones, sporting the specs and features above, or better, will get Android 3.0 while current devices, the handsets that can’t make the jump, will stay on Android 2.2 Froyo. That means you should be extra careful when planning to buy your next Android device in order to be able to install Gingerbread on it when it comes out.

There’s no way of confirming any of this just yet, but we’ll be back with more hot details the minute we have them. What say you, Google? Are you ready to spill the Gingerbread beans?
