Rumor: BlackBerry Storm 3 Specs Revealed

As a former BlackBerry loyalist myself, I can tell you that a lot of people in the BlackBerry community hoped that the BlackBerry Storm series of phones would be a honest competitor to the iPhone. What it ended up being was a BlackBerry with a touchscreen – which is okay for some, but disappointing in other regards. The folks at IntoMobile just posted what they’re hearing the specs for the BlackBerry Storm 3 will be, and the hardware looks to compare with the iPhone and the various top level Android devices.

Here’s what they’re saying will be in the BlackBerry Storm 3.

• 1GHz processor
• 1GB RAM
• 8GB ROM
• LTE/4G capable, headed for Verizon in the United States
• 5-megapixel camera
• BB’s SurePress technology, but completely new input mechanism
• New BB OS, not OS 6.0, more widgets and customization

Well, if true, this would be quite the phone. On the hardware side (in terms of processor speed, RAM, etc) BlackBerries have always seemed about five years out of date when compared to the iPhone/Android phone of the month. This phone, regarding hardware, would certainly be able to compete with those phones.

Regarding software – there are a few things the BlackBerry OS does very well. Namely the e-mail client and calendar app are the best I’ve used on a phone – bar none. With the previous Storm phones, the folks at RIM sort of “shoehorned” the BB OS onto the touchscreen phone, which it really wasn’t meant for, and it showed. The IntoMobile tip saying that they’ve got a new OS from the ground up is good news for RIM, I believe.

The report goes on to say that RIM is currently using Storm 3 hardware inside of a Storm 2 chassis for testing. Fine for testing, I suppose, but the Storm’s 3.25-inch screen will look a bit tiny compared to the iPhone 4/EVO 4G/Droid X. hopefully RIM will build a bigger screen for the device.
